Casualties of War (1989)

Casualties of War (1989) is one of the best war (anti-war) films and still does not have the recognition it deserves.  I wrote the dvd review in 2006, twenty years ago, updated it now and in English...
the Romanian version is here !

1966. An incident in Vietnam... the story of a repeated rape and a murder that could have been prevented, but which no one even wishes to punish—only to ignore. Casualties of War, a war regarded in America as synonymous with the loss of innocence, in which the heroes of the two World Wars became the villains and the executioners.

1987. After his first incredible mainstream success with The Untouchables, Brian De Palma, propelled onto the list of directors most coveted by the studios, could make whatever film he wanted. And he chose a controversial, repugnant, revolting subject, one that was later vehemently denied by almost everyone, especially Vietnam veterans. A real, infamous case that he had dreamed of bringing to the screen since 1969, when he saw at the Berlin Film Festival a film on the same subject, inspired by Daniel Lang's New York Times article. At the same time, one of his favourite films is The Bridge on the River Kwai, and De Palma decides to become David Lean for a little while (hence the key sequence on the bridge).

Filmed in Thailand under extremely harsh conditions, with an A-list cast of young actors on the rise (Michael J. Fox, Sean Penn, John Leguizamo, John C. Reilly), Casualties of War was released in 1989, only to be torn apart by critics, who found it exploitative and visceral, and almost completely ignored by audiences who had grown weary of Vietnam. Constructed as one vast flashback (and nightmare at the same time), it contains De Palma's overwhelming visual style and his recurring obsessions: guilt, the betrayal of comradeship, impossible love, impotence, passive voyeurism. But this time, instead of Brian De Palma's much-discussed Hitchcockian thriller fantasies, the events unfolding on screen are based on a true story. The viewer becomes complicit in the carnage, and the unsettling feeling of guilt gradually, methodically, almost paroxysmally takes hold. Ennio Morricone's score (following his previous collaboration on The Untouchables), punctuated by Gheorghe Zamfir's pan flute, is the film's principal source of emotion—elegiac, mournful, evocative of ghosts from the past and shattered dreams.

2006. The film America could not bear to watch, one of the most anti-war films ever made, is today being reassessed and regarded as equal to, or even greater than, its predecessors: The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket. And the victim of the war behind the screen continued to develop his recurring themes, concealed within his much-discussed Hitchcockian thriller fantasies, without ever again disturbing his fellow citizens' civic conscience with stories based on real events.

Extra: the extended edition (also the first one to reach Romania) includes six additional minutes of footage (material previously available only as deleted scenes—Eriksson's interrogation, an additional scene with Dale Dye, and an unexpected Greg Henry cameo), an emotional interview with Michael J. Fox, and a half-hour Making Of in which De Palma is far warmer and more talkative than usual—and if you're wondering why, it simply means you haven't seen the film.

4 Stars out of 5 - 8 out of 10 !

Victime de război / Casualties of War (1989)

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair (2004-2025)

You're in for a Treat !

The complete version of Kill Bill (s), aka The Whole Bloody Affair, is in Selected Romanian cinemas, for a Very Limited period of time ! With an Intermission too, just overlong, who needs 15 mins??  and in Glorious Shawscope !!!

Let's be Crystal Clear on this, Kill Bill was supposed to be just one film, not two, it was separated due to duration by the infamous youknowho producer and distributor. Tarantino was a bit upset but he conformed. Then he did his own cut. Now he even extended it.  Results: a new film, better than any other version, superior in storytelling, rhythm, timing and flow.

IMO don't stay after the overlong credits, you'll get a boneheadish animation entitled The LOST CHAPTER which makes no sesne and it;s actually a Tie-in of a video game. Go home with the

Now the differences (atken from various sources on the net):

The first change you'll notice is an extra 10 minute animated sequence that shows O-Ren Ishii getting revenge on the man that killed her parents. It's animated beautifully and gives O-Ren's character even more depth than she already had. Secondly you'll notice that the legendary fight scene at the House of Blue Leaves is now in full color. With this scene in full color you get to really see the carnage that The Bride creates. You see guys heads being chopped off and geysers of red blood bursting from their neck. You see limbs chopped off with bursts of red blood. You fully see the red blood soaked floor of the building and the red bloody water of the pond. It makes the scene so much more impactful. The third change you see, albeit a minor one, is you actually see how The Bride interrogates Sofia for information. Which of course includes her asking her questions and in turn chopping her arm off for not answering. But the last change and by far most important is at the end of Volume 1, Bill makes no mention of The Brides child still being alive. That small change not only improves Volume 1 but drastically improves Volume 2. Originally you go into Volume 2 technically ahead of The Bride as you know about her kid and she doesn't. But that small change puts us on equal footing with The Bride. It makes the scene of her coming through the door to her child not just shocking and impactful to her but to us, the audience.

The old Klingon proverb  "Revenge is a dish best served cold." shown at the beginning of the standard theatrical version of Kill Bill Vol. 1 is not present. A dedication to filmmaker Kinji Fukasaku is in its place, as was also the case in the opening of the Japanese theatrical release of Kill Bill Vol. 1.
+++

While the 2004 Cannes cut of this film has had various special screenings throughout the past two decades, Lionsgate's 2025 theatrical release is the first time this unified version of Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004) has become accessible to a wider audience.

There may have been minor alterations made from the Cannes cut to Lionsgate's cut, but here are some notable differences that separate THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR from VOLUME 1 and VOLUME 2.Modern Lionsgate logo plays before VOLUME 1's original Miramax logo. [*2025 only]
The "Kill Bill" title card during the opening credits contains the subtitle "The Whole Bloody Affair".
The uncensored Japanese version of VOLUME 1 is used for the first five chapters.
In Chapter 3, an additional 7.5 minutes of content is added to VOLUME 1's anime sequence in which a 13-year-old O-Ren attempts to kill Pretty Riki in an elevator.
At the end of Chapter 5, every shot after the Bride's final exchange with Sofie from VOLUME 1 is omitted (from airplane to end credits).
Between Chapters 5 and 6, a static "INTERMISSION" title card (white text, black background) stays on screen for 15 minutes. "Lonely Shepard" plays over the first few minutes of the intermission with the remainder being silent.
Everything from the opening of VOLUME 2 that precedes Chapter 6 is omitted (from Miramax logo to "Vol. 2" title card).
In Chapter 6, the Bride's opening narration at the Two Pines chapel from VOLUME 2 is omitted.
Entire cast, crew and song list from VOLUME 1 is integrated into VOLUME 2's end credits.
The uncensored version of Yuki's Revenge (2025) plays after the credits, front-loaded with an animated lobby jingle. [*2025 only]

9 out of 10 !!! 4 1/2 out of 5 !!!

Mega-trivia:
In Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004), Beatrix Kiddo (The Bride) is buried alive in the grave of Paula Schultz. This is a famous Quentin Tarantino "Easter Egg" connecting the film to Django Unchained (2012), as Paula Schultz is believed to be the deceased wife of Dr. King Schultz.
This video explains the connection between the grave of Paula Schultz in Kill Bill and Dr. King Schultz in Django Unchained.

The Surfer (2024)

“Don’t live here, don’t surf here”.

Another Nic Cage for Acting president, method of madness award ;)

Australian-Irish The Surfer was Cages first official Cannes fest selection in 34 years (after 1990's Wild at Heart!).

Mandy was in Quinzaine. Also Dog Eat Dog.

A cross of Wake in Fright with The Wicker Man (one of Cage's most insane films is the remake of the cult British film of 1973), it's a psychedelic drama, unfolding in the Australian surfing territory.

Great score by Francois Tetaz, all reminiscent of Ennio Morricone's sound.

Written by Thomas Martin, who took a cue from the short story that based 1968's Burt Lancaster's The Swimmer.

Directed by Lorcan Finnegan who debuted with an interesting curio back in 2019, Vivarium.

But the most interesting thing in it is Julian Mc Mahon, recently passed away at 56 :( He's the main attraction in the film, as Scally, the macho guru of the beach, dressed all in Red.

Sight and Sound review here.

RIP Lalo Schifrin

waiting for this to happen for a while :(, I mean Lalo Schifrin was 93, he was retired for a while, after the The Hidden Dove (2018) his last score, not a notable one. He was one of the last great ones, only John Williams survives that Golden generation (Morricone, Jerry Goldsmith, etc).

The Argentinian Piano man is foremost responsible of the Mission; Impossible theme. Six times Oscar nominated, no win :(: Cool Hand Luke (1967), The Fox (1968), Voyage of the Damned (1976), The Amityville Horror (1979) and The Sting II (1983) and for the song “People Alone” from The Competition (1980). Honorary Oscar in 2018.

His signature is on Bullitt, Mannix, Enter the Dragon, The Eagle has Landed, Dirty Harry, and its sequels, from Magnum Force to The Enforcer, the three Rush Hour films. Close collaborator of Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood. Also did the music for Carlos Saura's Tango and many jazz collaboations, with Ray Charles in 1965's Norman Jewison's The Cincinnati Kid.

obit in the Hollywood Reporter

The last film I saw with his music now (catch-up) is The Mean Season (1985), a thriller with Kurt Russell and Richard Jordan.

The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023)

The Last Stop in Yuma County is a cool little movie, debut (written & directed & edited by Francis Galluppi), film noir,  B style, happening in the early 70's (my guess), in a Yuma desert station with no gas. The idea of fatality reigns.

Cast: Jim Cummings, Jocelin Donahue Faizon Love, Gene Jones and baddie Richard Brake

Blood Simple, Bad Times at El Royale

& now I heard about LaRoy, Texas, also 2023.

Great title song, Love is Blue the 1968 Paul Mauriat version, sounds like a Morricone song and I realised I knew it from childhood from a Richard Clayderman record (!)

RIP Ennio Morricone

July 6th 2020. A sad sad day for all film and music lovers !
Ennio, il maestro Morricone is no more...
He was 91 (born November 10th 1928). He even conducted a concert in Rome this January !
I wrote a LMA piece on his carrer and influence by the time of too long awaited Oscar and the score of The Hateful Eight  in the Sunete magazine! Time to republish soon.
I saw him with my buddies Andrei & Relu in 2004, live in Budapest.  The Arena Concerto series.
Saw him again in 2012 in Cannes, at the anniversary projection of restored Once Upon a Time in America.  The best partnership ever, Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone, unmatched even by the Prokofiev-Einsenstein collaboration, or the Bernard Herrmann-Hitchcock, or Nino Rota with Fellini.
He did great scores for many directors, three for Brian De Palma (Untouchables, Casualties of War, Mission to Mars), three for Gillo Pontercorvo (Battle of Algiers, Burn/Chiemada, Ogro), for Polanski (Frantic), Joffe (the Mission), John Carpenter (The Thing), Warren Beatty (Bugsy), oh so many, and so many perfect brilliant ones. The giallos, starting with the first Argento films, to Spasmo and The Black Belly of Tarantula, gli polizioteschi, from Revolver to les  French -Le Clan des siciliens, to Peur sur la Ville, to Chi Mai in Le Profesionnel, Le Marginal. Last score of his I heard was in Jose Giovanni, Le Ruffian (1983), that I cought-up with last month.
Love his psychedelic score for The Exorcist II  (The Heretic) !!! Love the parodic score for Ochhio a la Pena ! (Buddy Goes West/ Atentie la pana de vultur!), which wierdly he did for Michele Lupo (ans Bud Spencer, and Amidou!). Or the original parodic My Name is Nobody/Mio nome e nessuno.  The beautiful Il Grande Silenzio for Sergio Corbucci. Pop-ish Danger Diabolik for Mario Bava ! And of course the dramatic TV series La Piovra !
Finally after forgiving him of using-remashing up -his music and themes he made some music for his fan, Quentin Tarantino in /for The Hateful Eight. That uncanilly got him his only Oscar of his career ! He got a Honorary one in 2007 after many nominations, first of which only in 1979 (!)  for Malick's Days of Heaven ! Last score for his friend, another T-as in Tornatore, for whom he was an attached composer, for La Corrispondenza, in 2016.  Unarguably he did some of his finest music for Tornatore, from Nuovo Cinama Paradiso to Malena to Legend of 1900.
The most influential film score composer of all time, over 500 films, my favourite film composer and one of the best musicians EVER !

                                                                  Ennio Morricone
Here's a post from Film Stage which contains his best 20 scores -in their opinion -almost agreed

The Ninth Gate (1999)

"Mambo Jumbo , Mambo Jambo...."
                           (Boris Balkan)
"I don't believe in the occult. I don't believe. Period."
 (Roman Polanski)
********

I saw this film back in 1999, or maybe it was later in 2000, it didn't come out in cinemas over here so I was forced to watch a shitty VHS copy, panned and scanned. I was a huge fan of the Arturo Perez-Reverte book, El club Dumas, his best as far as you ask me, not that I've read any other :), and fascinated with the Alexandre Dumas lost chapter of  Les Trois Musquetaires, Le Vin d'Anjou. It was my faved thiong about that topic then , so I was uber-dissapointed when I saw the film
Let's not forget in 1999 Eyes Wide Shut came out, with the illuminati orgy in a castle, and by those means Polanski 's stuff seems to be more like an irony.  Very Freench too. Also Polanski's New York resembles Kubrick's NY, both being shot in Movielands in Europe.
*******
What strikes you most  looking back at this after 21 years (it's a big hit these days streaming on Netflix), it's uncanny how Johnny Depp plays straight, the 'book detective' Dean Corto  (in the book, Lucas Corto, or LC !).
*******
*-any Dario Argento influenza ? or topics ? Definetly with Suspiria, and the Three Mothers, mostly Inferno. And adds more Grand Guignol than on regular Polanski !
*-very simillar with Angel Heart, cult film from 1987 by Alan Parker, with Mickey Rourke as Harold Angel, PI and here Frank Langella as Boris ! Balkan !!!, chewing the set-up and standing in for De Niro's Louis Cyphre !
*-as book movies go, this is the closest to a literary film as the puzzle of The Name of the Rose (1985), with who it has special intellectual liasons !
The Ninth Gate (1999)
******
Amazingly- or not, these days the internet is full of stuff regarding the occult and obscure so, this, as a big critical and box office flop when it came out, made its name from video, dvd, vod and TV. That is where you study shit, my friend-o, surely !
I just link here one silent Kilar's music overt, Esoteric meaning of film video ! from it you'll get more links and dig in if you want, imo the info is quite shallow and takes out the fun of contorversy!
If you have time you'll find a lot to watch and learn :), more than the duration of the film, at the time it was long and dense, but definetly not overlong and/or boring, I would't mind it going on for another 15-20 mins.
Also the ending is so abrupt and yes, controversial. I think it's more or less a Roman Polanski typical (TM/RPTM) black/dark joke.
*****
Huge assets / or +++++++++:
music by Wojciech Kilar, brilliant, majestic, dramatic, a classic on its own ! With a Korean soprano, added the value of Ennio Morricone, and based on La Havaine by Camille Saint-Saens.
-the whole score from vinyl rip here !
Photography:
Darius Khondji's only collaboration with Roman is just beutiful ! llate fall location shot in Portugal, spain and France helps :)
Set design:
Dean Tavoularis, master of set and design (wondered if Depp's character Dean in the film came from him or from a real Dean, or James Dean ?, ask Polanski )
Directing -with panache, of course, you can see Polanski's having fun, working with Depp for the fisrt (and only) time, casting his beautiful wife 2.0, Emmanuele Seigner, doing some Hitchcock and even quiting himself (Chinatown, The Tenant, Rosemary's Baby, Frantic, Bitter Moon, etc)
****
Minuses:
-the script, if you read the novel and liked it it's not your juju
-the albino sidekick -in the novel we had Rochefort, this one is quite risible and dumb (and dumb), no lines til the castle, what if you went with a cliche glasseye or Bela/Lon/Boris/Vincent ? a Cushing/Lee approach ?
-act 3 1/2, I mean the last two castle set pieces are just for laughs, but now seeing it again for the 1st time in a decade, I think more things are intentional here than unintentional, esp the witty dark irony of  R.P.The Ninth Gate (1999)
***
The New York scenes, obviously faked, but actually it gives a Hitchcockian sense of set, retro projection, old style. Why James Russo, and what you did with it ?
**
-watch out for symbolisms, that come out much better on second or repeat viewings. Like Shell,
Shells ?
-also loved the way Johnny D. smokes himself silly in every scene, Lucky no filters ? Plus the whisky's. Classic Film noir cliches and homages ! Though, Polanski said of Depp, "He decided to play it rather flat, which wasn't how I envisioned it; and I didn't tell him it wasn't how I saw it"
*
7 out of 10, *** 1/2 out of Five,
would've loved this to be a real 9 !

Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971)

The Black Belly of the Tarantula (La tarantola dal ventre nero) is considered one of the superior giallos. And it\s been staying in my Giallo B collection for at least ten years since I saw it now. And now I can concur. It is.
A film by Paulo Cavara who might be unknown now but he worked on the Mondo Cane movies.
Music by Ennio Morricone, conducted by Bruno Nicolai
Uncommon for the giallos of the perios the protagonist is a police inspector, played by an "unual suspect" of giallo genre, a very young Giancarlo Giannini.
The very hot blonde Barabara Bouchet is killed in the very beginning and the also very hot future Bond girl and mrs. Ringo Starr, Barbara Bach is killed later, and she shows up just a few minutes, enough to undress and..be of course stabbed to death...The real two female protagonists of the film are Claudine Auger, a deja Bond girl -in Thunderball- and Stefania Sandrelli (Il Conformista).
Shot with plenty of zooms by Marcello Gatti, who filmed Battle of Algiers, Quiemada/Burn and Ogro fpr Pontecuorvo, A\L'anonimo Veneziano, The Salamander and la Piovra for TV !
a great chase on the rooftops is the highlight except the MO of the murders which remind a Tarantula being killed by a black WASP !
format -1.85 :1
Barbara Bach, Barbara Bouchet, and Giancarlo Giannini in La tarantola dal ventre nero (1971)

Top soundtracks 2018

1.   Bad Times at El Royale/ Vremuri grele la El Royale - Muzica incidentală excelentă sixties: Four Tops -Bernardette și I Got a Feeling, The Box Tops-The Letter, The Four Preps -26 Miles (Santa Catalina), The Crystals -He's Sure the Boy I Love, Frankie Valli-Can’t Take my Eyes of You (I love You Baby /faimoasă din The Deer Hunter.
Piesele Cynthiei Erivo (“This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)” și “Hold On I’m Coming) nu apăreau, acum în decembrie a apărut o nouă versiune de soundtrack care le include !
Image result for 1. Bad Times at El Royale

2.   First Man /Primul om pe Lună.

4.   Mollys Game/Jocuri secrete și Ocean's 8,  două score-uri excelente de Daniel Pemberton,  compozitorul meu preferat de la The Couselor (2013) încoace, Ar mai fi fost și All the Money in the World/ Pentru toţi banii din lume pentru Ridley Scott, dar este sub celelelte două, iar și acest film și Molly sunt datate 2107. Deci rămîne Ocean's 8, jucăuș, funky, jazzy și frenchy. Merita însă un film mai bun.Image result for oceans eight 2018 score

5.   Widows/Văduve. Was, no Hans ? Sure, there’s Hans !
Noul Hans Zimmer, cu un take de la Ennio Morricone, altul de la The Dark Knight (banca) și o nouă piesă de comeback a nigeriencei Sade, The Big Unknown, hip hop cu The Dice Boys, plus un soundtrack cu Van Morrison, Procol Harum, și Nina Simone (via Dimitri Tiomkin-Wild is the Wind, direct de pe vinil )

6.   The Predator cu temele lui Alan Silvestri, dar introduce muzică de război gen The Dirty Dozen. Intens. Semnat de englezul Henry Jackman (Kick-Ass, Kong, Captain America).
