Dolce Far Niente (1998) now in cinemas !

After Nae Caranfil completed his second film, Asphalt Tango, in 1996, he received an invitation to make a production in Italy: an ambitious period biopic about a supposed meeting between Stendhal and Rossini. Dolce Far Niente, in 1998. Based on Frédéric Vitoux's novel La Comédie de Terracina, winner of the French Academy Prize, the film is a blend of comedy and drama about the condition of the artist confronted with worldly frivolity and the unconscious enthusiasm of revolution and conspiracy.

The film, which came out at the time with spectacularly bad timing, following Beaumarchais (1996), was not a great success in France or Italy, so it never had a theatrical release in Romania, going straight to pay TV, on HBO, where I had the honour of producing its on-air promotion in 1999. :) In the meantime, I've learned that it has also been broadcast on Cinemaraton TV.

A superb cast: François Cluzet is Stendhal, Isabella Ferrari is Joséphine, Margherita Buy is Countess Gabriella Nencini, Giancarlo Giannini is Count Nencini, Pierfrancesco Favino is Rossini. Caranfil had a lucky hand with the casting; the careers of the film's actors are still shining today.

The cinematography is by another Romanian, Cristian Comeagă, Nae Caranfil's collaborator on his first four films, up to Philanthropy, while the score is wonderful, composed by the renowned Nicola Piovani.

The 4K restored print premiered at TIFF in 2024, when I, too, saw it on the big screen for the first time. Now, however, it is in cinemas, remastered, like a brand-new film. And it has held up even better than it did at the time of its original release!

Do yourselves a favour and see it in the cinema now! It's worth it!

După ce Nae Caranfil a terminat al doilea lui film, Asfalt Tango, în 1996, a urmat o invitaţie, pentru a face o producție în Italia, un biopic de epocă ambiţios, despre o presupusă întîlnire între Stendhal şi Rossini. Dolce far Niente, în 1998. Bazat pe romanul Comedia de la Terracina de Frédéric Vitoux, premiat de Academia Franceză, filmul este un melanj de comedie şi dramă, despre condiţia artistului faţă de frivolitatea mondenă şi entuziasmul inconştient al revoluţiei şi conspiraţiei.

Filmul, care a ieșit în epocă într-un bad timing copios, după Beaumarcahis (1996), nu  avut mare succes în Franța și Italia așa că nu a avut premiera în cinama în România ci direct pe pay tv, la HBO, unde am avut onoarea de a-i face promo-ul în 1999 :). Între timp am înțeles că s-a mai dat pe Cinemaraton TV.

Imaginea e semnată de alt român, Cristian Comeagă, colaboratorul lui Nae Caranfil la primele 4 filme, pînă la Filantropica, iar muzică e minunată, compusă de renumitul Nicola Piovani.

Copia restaurată în 4K , premiera nouă la TIFF în 2024, atunci cînd l-am văzut și eu pentru prima dată pe marele ecran. Acum însă e în săli, remasterat, ca un film nou-nouț. Și se ține mai bine ca la vremea premierei !

Cannes 2026 Oficial Selection

Cannes 2026 official selection includes the new Cristian Mungiu film, FJORD, his 1st International film, shot in Norway, starring Sebastian Stan and Renate  Reinsve ! The two Osccar nominated actors were together before in A Different Man (2024). I'm getting Oscar buzz already on this one...

Top films of 2025

Tough cookie, lost count of how many films I've seen. Less than probably any year. Over 200, less than 300 ? More ? I started to put them on Letterboxed starting late October but still didn't catch up with the rest.

Top of the series is here and films from 2024 are again a problem, The Brutalist and The Substance should've make the 2025 list, as there still are some of 2025 which I haven't seen yet (Hamnet,-saw it,. did not like at all- Resurrection, Sound of Falling ?). Marty Supreme would make Top 5 but I've seen it in Januaray 2026.

Just caught up with Park Chan-Wook's No Other Choice that makes the list. It's limited in Romanian Cinemas now, so try to see it on the big screen, it's worthy.

Kinda disappointed with Romanian Cinema this year too. I liked Kontinental '25 and that's it. Could 've been also Jude's Dracula but he made it such an intentional mess and duration wise a whole calvary...

But disappointments of the year: the new Running Man by Edgar Wright. And the last Mission: Impossible. Hopefully...Oy...

Interesting slow film, in the Venice Competition in 2023. Modern beat score, strange and eerie. Song Last Nite by The Stokes (2011) on the end credits.

2024: The Good The Bad & The Ugly

Un an de filme bune, filme rele și filme despre care nu îmi pasă (mă refer aici doar la premiere în cinematografele românești).

Un an greu din toate punctele de vedere ;)

Pe scurt, trebuiesc punctate (chez moi:):

Internationale:

Furiosa (George Miller, O saga Mad Max) pentru mine (v Culturama de iunie), e filmul-cult al anului.

Și #1, far from the madding crowd ;)

Anora (Sean Baker) e cel mai bun film și totodată cea mai bună comedie, Palme d'or la Cannes și va fi la Oscaruri la greu, 

dar se va lupta cu:

Emilia Perez de Jaques Audiard, premiul Juriului și de interpretare (colectiv) la Cannes , un muzical risque cu carteluri mexicane și schimbare de sex, votat drept filmul european al anului, cinci premii EFA și favoritul la premiul pentru cela mi bun film străin (sure bet!) .

Civil War/ Războicivil-un film politic, cam anti-american și nihilist de Alex Garland.

Joker: Folie a Deux (Todd Phillips) -muzicalul anului și totodată cel mai ciudățel și non-climatic sequel făcut vreodată.

The Apprentice: Sebastian Stan este e impecabil ca un june Donald Trump, școlit de ”avocatul diavolului”, Roy Cohn (un excepțional Jeremy Strong): Biopicul care trebuia să ia premiul de interpretare la Cannes, boicotat pe cît se poate de Trump & co.

The Bikeriders, deși flawed, filmul lui Jeff Nichols documentează minuțios o epocă pierdută și va deveni un film-cult. 

Horror: MadS/Noapte decoșmar, pentru mine (Franța, s/r: David Moreau)

Interesante au fost și Blink Twice, Sting, Oddity, Never Let Go, chiar si Longlegs și Heretic (Eretic: Labirintul morții) 

-(despre Nosferatu din 2025 aici).

-iar The Substance nu a intrat decit in ianuarie 2025, de vazut in cinema pentru cei "curajosi", aici.

Indie art-house: Love Lies Bleeding (Dragoste, minciuni și sînge), de Rose Glass./ acum pe max/

Al doilea Lanthimos al anului, Kinds of Kindness/Forme de bunătate, de la Cannes, unde a luat premiul de interpretare masculină (Jesse Plemons).

Danezul Bastarden/Bastardul/Promised Land (Nikolj Arcel), cu un excepțional Mads Mikkelsen, dar e de anul trecut.

Tot de anul trecut (v. topul meu total aici!):

PoorThings / Sărmane creaturi(Yorgos Lanthimos, 4 premii Oscar din 11 nominalizări, via Veneția), Perfect Days/Zile perfecte (Wim Wenders, cel mai bun actor la Cannes),                                              The Zone of Interest/ Zona deinteres (Jonathan Glazer, Oscar pentru cel mai bun film străin și cel mai bun Sunet).

Cele mai ”ciudate” premiere (toate cu an de producție 2023):

România.

Filmul românesc al anului (și nu numai): Anul nou care nu a fost -premiii de la Veneția la Cairo, Frankfurt, etc, peste 100.000 de spectatori în cinema ! V. interviu în numarul trecut din Culturama cu Bogdan Mureșanu, regizor, scenarist și producător. Vești bune pentru ce care nu l-au văzut (și cei care vor să îl revadă): un nou Cadou de Crăciun (re: scurt metrajul său premiat din 2018, care, după cum am mai scris poate fi văzut pe canalul Cinepub de pe youtube), de pe 22 decembrie ANCNF intră pe streaming pe Netflix.

Trei kilometri pînă la capătul lumii, filmul lui Emanuel Pârvu, propunerea României la Oscar, via Cannes și Queer Palm, premiul Universităților europene la EFA (European Film Awards). Deocmadată nu e pe streaming.

Pe listele criticilor de film anglo-americani (Sight & Sound, BFI, New York Times, etc.) se regăsește filmul lui Radu Jude despre care am scris deja (ca la majoritatea titlurilor, v. blogul meu sau arhiva Culturama), Nu te aștepta prea mult de la sfîrșitul lumii, care a ieșit în toamna lui 2023. Poate fi văzut pe max (HBO max).

 Anul Nou care n-a fost / The New Year That Never Came a intrat de azi în cinematografele românesti.

Uite, e la Cinema One Laserplex Brasov de la 18.15 mîine și poimîine în avanpremieră. Și la Cinema City AFI. Zic de Brașov, că vă plingeti ca nu aveti filme de vazut la cinema, mai ales românești !

Recomand in privat dar si in public :) Am recomandat în scris în Culturama de toamnă, apoi am facut si un interviu cu Bogdan in numarul de noiembrie (soon here). Am recomandat la HIT FM Brasov & Zona Metropolitana, si pe unde am mai fost.

RIP Ion Rițiu

Ion Rițiu enchanted my childhood. He was Rică Păsărin, the lead in Duelul (1981) by Sergiu Nicolaescu,Sergiu Nicolaescu, his last "comisar" film in Ceaușescu's times. Up to Supravietuitorul (2008), in which he gave Rițiu a part too, 30 odd years later. 

He was the rich bad boy gone mad in Sergiu s Ciuleandra (1985), Puiu Faranga,on the Liviu Rebreanuțs book adaptation. 

Next on an officier in Noi, cei din linia întâi (1985).

He was also the ottoman boss, Baiazid in Mircea (1988). 

Last film, Poker (2010), also by Le Serge. Actually Sergiu NicoleascuSergiu Nicoleascu was the only one who gave him film parts. Why? :(

I saw him as a kid on a theatre play in Oradea or Cluj. Hollywood type of charisma, nice diction, ultra photogenic old style (30s). I was charmed.  He worked as a theatre actor in Târgu-Mureș. Dan Alecsandrescu, my mom's youth friend, the theatre director there put him in many plays.

Ion Rițiu was 73 (born 4 Dec. 1950).
