Furiosa @ Cannes 77

Today's announcement from Festival de Cannes !!! Told ya so (here;) at the trailer's debut on Dec. 1st 2023!

Nine years after Mad Max: Fury Road, the Australian director, screenwriter and producer George Miller’s famous saga’s is back on the Croisette! The highly anticipated Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be revealed in the presence of the director and the cast, led by Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke, on the occasion of an Out of Competition gala screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière at the Palais des Festivals on Wednesday May 15.

Mad Max (1979), Mad Max II: The Challenge (1981), Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024): in 5 episodes and in almost 5 decades, George Miller has created a cathartic myth, even a cathartic mythology. Mad Max is a chronicle of societal and environmental collapse, playing with genre codes to question these themes, initially visionary and now cruelly topical. Originally filmed in the Australian Outback, this revisited “Western on wheels” describes a dystopian world where speed and movement are just as synonymous with life energy as with death as a result of resource depletion, offering the viewer a dose of adrenaline rarely equalled on the big screen.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the latest episode. It returns to the origins of Furiosa, the new saga-heroine who appeared in Mad Max: Fury Road, rewarded with several Oscars. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy plays the young Furiosa, trying to return home, despite numerous hostile armed gangs.

“The idea of this prequel has been with me for over a decade,” said George Miller. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to return to the Festival de Cannes – along with Anya, Chris and Tom – to share Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. There is no better place than La Croisette to experience this film with audiences on the world stage.”

George Miller, the singular and unclassifiable filmmaker, passing from post-apocalyptic films to young audiences – Babe (1995), Happy Feet (2006) – was twice a Festival de Cannes Jury member before becoming its President in 2016 for the 69th edition. In 2022, he presented Three Thousand Years of Longing with Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, Out of Competition.

Red Rooms / Les Chambres Rouges (2023)

Canadian thriller/horror/psychological drama in French (shot in Montreal) screening now in Romanian Theaters (very selected;). Distributed by Cay Films (their best entry on their roaster)

Sitges and Fantasia entry, awarded at various film fests of last year, this film deserves to be better known. I had an inner feeling seeing the poster but had no clue about it. So, I was happy I went to see it in the cinema, it was an imersing experience.

A twist on the serial killer game, focusing on their groupies, and a descent into "The Dark Web" more realistic than any I've seen so far.

It' s also a first fare into the genre  (cross-over) by writer/director Pascal Plante, Les Chambres Rouges/ Red Rooms -in Romanian it's "Camera rosie" (singular instead of plural!)

Great score (John Carpenter style by Dominique Plante, I guess it's the director's wife), sound design, acting (Juliette Gariepy is sensational as Kelley-Anne!, she looks alike a young Madeleine Stowe but with an uncanny glance intensity, then there is big-eyed Laurie Biron as Clementine ), masterfully shot (a lot of long takes, the first one in the courtroom is quite a tour-de-force), interesting choice of framing (1.50:1), atmospheric and mysterious, with high tension psychologically and emotionally.

Reminded me of David Cronenberg and a bit of Repulsion.

See it in a cinema if you can ! Also not for the faint of heart (rated R-N 15)

Deadline review from Karlovy Vary film fest (in competition).

RIP Steve Harley The Cockney Rebel

Another bad news Sunday...Steve Harley just died. The leader of Cockney Rebel and the creator of The Human Menagerie (his 1st album with Cockney Rebel in 1973) just got to be 73 on February 27th. He had cancer and that forced him to stop his 2023 tour in the middle of t. I 1st heard of him on Radio Free Europe back in 1983 with the song Sebastian (1973), which was a powerplay hit on the Metronom by Request show. "Make me smile"

I will pay a tribute to him on Rockland Radio this Thursday, with Death Trip.

So now we're on a death trip, listen to the blood dripOozing from a curled lip, ever thought of dying slowlyEver thought of dying totally unholy.

Obit on bbc here

and here's a bio on youtube

And can you think of one good reason to remain? To remain? To remain? To remain?

OSCARS 96 @2024

 Happy with these Oscars ! #96, man,lookin' up for #100 !

my prognosis was here

Happy for Godzilla Minus One because they had the best mangled speech ever ! Domo Arrigato Mr. Roboto ;) Haven't seen yet the flick ! would've loved to see it screened here (in Ro.)

Happy to see Navalny (well, now that he is is dead ;((((, they put on the beginning of the doc that is on HBO Max... which I 've seen just nights ago...) and Slava Ukraina for 20 Days in Mariupol ! I wondered if they'd cut the cable in Russia...

Robert Downey Jr was (and is) a very happy camper ! Not only a happy camper ! The most happier campiest camper ! I thought he would win for Chaplin in 1992 (Oscars 1993) !!! He thought that too ! He was young and arrogant ! And he needs this now ! Check. Not that Mark Ruffalo's career best in Poor Things wouldn't beat mr. Levi Strauss !!! He actually couldn't caare less ;)

Of course the biggest loser and the glorious loser is Marty again with Killers of the Flower Moon.. I feel most for Robbie Robertson's score...Gud Nite brother...

Jimmy Kimmel did a decent performance, not very risque, not very Hu Ha, but safe (almost)

Ahnuld  (mr Freeze) & Danny de Vito (penguin) were the best presenters IMO, funny how they threatened The Batman Birdman (Michael Keaton in the front row).

even though you had Al Pacino on the stage, but not much Hu Ha (Best film presenter)

The best was John Cena in the nude (a reminder of the David Niven 1974 streaker/runner in the bush)

Oppie surely got the cake, as it was expected

Poor Things, same as expected, sorry Lily but she seemed ok

Zone of Interest -sound and foreign film, it rocks !

John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter & Daniel Davies - My Name is Death (2024)

John Carpenter, his son Cody and nephew Daniel Davies are putting out LOST THEMES vol. IV: NOIR

here's Lost Themes vol. I (2015)

Last time i saw JC and heard about him in Studio 666 where he has a cool cameo.

last Halloween sucked and all in all except the original there were all unnecessary remakes and cash-ins. part II was kinda cool tho. But the Rob Zombie remakes and the reboots booted.

and this is the first release from the album: My Name is Death

nice black and white video too.

Dune part Two (2024)

Saw Dune. Zwei. Nicht Drei ;)

here's my and my buddies thoughts of the 1st Villeneuve film.

direct link: https://revistagolan.com/dume-despre-dune-7-oameni-scriu-despre-filmul-lui-villeneuve/?fbclid=IwAR0eGR8HEUUou5D3ooGccvXo4MiSKwxvs66ECYlCK-OryJ-vy9rkUYIGFj0

This time I'm not sure I can gather them for a part deux review...but weirdly enough none of them saw it in the 1st 2 weeks...

My main interest. As in Heroes (old Gods, Almost Dead topic...) Chris Walken is the Emperor Shaddam IV. Sounds like an SNL sketch to many it seems, read a review that considered that to be a grave mistake. Dudes, this is the guy from Deer Hunter, The Dead Zone and The King of New York.

If you know him from a Fatboy Slim video that's your problem.

The Man is a monument of whatever you want, pop culture, and for some of us bigger than the religions and conflicts of Dune.

More Cowbell ?

-I didn't care about the freemen, Wonka with blue eyes, Zendaya Mondatta, his mom and his sis. The worms looks great, the dunes are all righy (Jordan), Zimmer pulls some Tubular Bells in the ending, Elvis is a mean Feyd Rautha and Bardem (Stilgar) plays like he's Anthony Quinn on steroids. Shades of Lawrence of Arabia were in the original novel, here there is Star Wars galore, esp. The Empire Strikes Back, the battle on the ice planet, revisited here on yellow sand.  What else? A Gladiator scene in black and white and too little emotion- for me. Not enough cowbell. Amazingly this went straight to Top IMDB #11 (while the 1st film didn't even make the top 250 !!!), let's see how it will do in due time. #3 should be better imo. It has more politics in the plot, less worms and Mu'adib becomes who he should be (a Vader analogy?)

May the Dude be with you!

Keith Richards-I’m Waiting for the Man (SOTD)

Keef honors Lou Reed. March 1st.

I'm Waiting for the Man  is  Velvet Underground song recorded for their debut album in 1967.

His Birthday being March 2nd.

“To me, Lou stood out. The real deal! Something important to American music and to ALL MUSIC! I miss him and his dog.” - Keith Richards

Communique:

The digital single & music video are out now and featured on the upcoming album The Power of the Heart: A Tribute to Lou Reed, which includes newly recorded covers from Keith Richards, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Rufus Wainwright, Lucinda Williams, Maxim Ludwig & Angel Olsen, Rickie Lee Jones, Mary Gauthier, Bobby Rush, Automatic, The Afghan Whigs, and Rosanne Cash. This special collection will be released by Light in the Attic Records and available on Vinyl & CD at fine independent record shops worldwide on Record Store Day (April 20th).

It goes without saying that the legendary Lou Reed was a true rock ’n’ roll pioneer. From The Velvet Underground’s debut in 1967 all the way through the end of his days, Reed sang truth from his heart. He lived life to the limit—and then some. The Power of the Heart is a tribute to Reed’s freedom of expression with covers spanning his groundbreaking years with the Velvets into his majestic solo career. Each track is a glorious extension of the Rock ’n’ Roll Animal’s soul, ever adventurous and avant-garde.
