RIP Drew Struzan

Drew Struzan, the man who designed some of the most iconic posters in the history of Movieland, for over 150 films. From the Star Wars and Indiana Jones series to Blade Runner, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China and Back to the Future in the 80's, then over a new generation of filmmakers-Tim Burton-Planet of the Apes, Mars Attacks, Frank Darabont-The Shawnshank Redemption, The Mist (David's paintings), The Green Mile, Guillermo Del Toro-Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth- has passed away on Oct. 13th. He was 78...

Note (grazie, LD): Legendary Italian poster art maestro Renato Casaro died on Sept. 30 at 89...He did the posters for the Leone spaghetti westerns, up to Flash Gordon and Conan the Barbarian (as they were Dino de Laurentiis productions). He retired in 1998 but came back in 2019, called by Quentin Tarantino to realize some "old school illustrated Western posters" ("Uccidimi Subito Ringo, disse il Gringo" aka "Kill Me Now Ringo, Said The Gringo", and "Nebraska Jim") for Italian films starring Rick Dalton, the character Leonardo DiCaprio plays in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Struzan and Casaro have even a poster in common, for The Name of the Rose in 1986, for whom they did both posters.

Struzan                                                   Casaro

Struzan also designed LP covers before film posters, including the legendary Alice Cooper's 1975 `Welcome to My Nightmare`.

In 2013, he was the subject of Erik Sharkey’s feature documentary “Drew: The Man Behind The Poster,” with interviews with collaborators like George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Frank Darabont, Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro.

exhaustive obit in Variety here

“Drew made event art. His posters made many of our movies into destinations…and the memory of those movies and the age we were when we saw them always comes flashing back just by glancing at his iconic photorealistic imagery. In his own invented style, nobody drew like Drew.

Alice Cooper - Wild One ( The Original A.C. Group)

The Revenge of Alice Cooper, the new album by Alice Cooper featuring his original group after more than 50 years off (Muscle of Love in 1973), will be out on July 25th 2025 !!! The 1st single was Black Mamba (out on youtube in April), fearturing Robby Krieger (The Doors).

Inspired by the iconic 1953 film The Wild One starring Marlon Brando, the track captures the same defiant spirit that once shocked middle America and defined a generation. Reuniting five decades after their rise to fame, the band channels the chaos, danger, and cool of their early days, a time when rock was feared, eyeliner was scandalous, and every show felt like a revolution. "Wild Ones" is the sound of the Alice Cooper Group with their engines roaring, still loud, still dangerous, and still not asking for permission. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wild Ones We are the wild ones crashin' through the night Livin' in the shadows, hidden from the light Revving up our engines, sharpening our claws Cause baby when you're hungry, the jungle is the law Oh, runnin' with the wild ones Yeah, baby we're the wild ones Yeah, we're the wild ones, we live in every town We own the city streets, we rule the underground, There is no cagin' us, you'll suffer if you try We got the rage in us, cause it makes us feel alive Oh, runnin' with the wild ones Yeah, baby we're the wild ones Wild ones, wild ones, wild ones Can you feel it, rolling thunder, Lose your mind and drag you under Can you see it, getting' higher Cause it's burning, burning like a fire We are the damned ones, this is the life we choose There's no redemption and nothin' left to lose. If you see us coming, you won't have time to pray When you hear the motors gunning, just get out of our way Yeah, runnin with the wild ones Yeah, baby we're the wild ones Wild ones, wild ones, wild ones Can you feel it, rolling thunder, Lose your mind and drag you under Can you see it, getting' higher Cause it's burning, like a fire

LMA Alice @76 !

“I know you’re looking for a real good time. So, let me introduce you to a friend of mine. I’m Alice.

I’m the Master of Madness; the Sultan of Surprise…so don’t be afraid, just look into my eyes.”

Vincent Damon Furnier aka Alice, the Coop, is 76 today ! La multi ani, hope to see ya again soon !

Just mentioned him on Wayne Kramer's obit cos Wayne played and contributed with songs on Alice's album Detroit Stories (2021). Like this one:

Go Man Go

Also on the album is Sister Anne, the MC5 song, composed by Fred "Sonic" Smith.

Alice's albums, esp. the ones I'm day and date with, the last 20+ years (mostly from The Last Temptation -1994, his return to form, onward) are always on my Top albums of that year. And last year it was ROAD, a great Meta Alice album about the Life on the Road.

RIP Wayne Kramer

One of the greatest musicians and guitarists, gone but not forgotten? Unfortunately not many know his name and work today.

A musician's musician, Wayne Kramer was one of the founders of MC5, a very ephemeral but iconic group, proto-punk, and more political than the whole rock scene of the day. They put out three albums forever to "Kick Out The Jams". That was the title of their first, a live album in 1969. Then Back in the USA and Hight Time, 1970 and 1971. They disbanded in 1972.

Kramer was radical, he was political, a leftie of course, he became a junkie, did time in jail for selling drugs, converted, played free jazz, punk, put very deep meaningful lyrics to rock and roll. His solo work I love most, from The Hard Stuff  to Dangerous Madness, Citizen Wayne and Adult World.

He played last on Alice Cooper's album, Detroit Stories. He was planning for an album of new music, produced by Bob Ezrin. Wayne Kramer was 75. LLMF...

Auto-biography here.

                     "Wayne S. Kramer 'PEACE BE WITH YOU' April 30, 1948 – February 2, 2024."[

"His band the MC5 basically invented punk rock music... Wayne came through personal trials of fire with drugs and jail time and emerged a transformed soul who went on to save countless lives through his tireless acts of service." (Tom Morello)

Alice Cooper - Road (2023)

“I know you’re looking for a real good time. So, let me introduce you to a friend of mine. I’m Alice.

I’m the Master of Madness; the Sultan of Surprise…so don’t be afraid, just look into my eyes.”

(I'm Alice", song #1)

*******

The new album from The Coop,  my favourite shocker-still the punk riot teenage rascal at 75!!!,s

Just saw him 3 months ago again with 'em Hollywood Vampires.

Out on August 25t, his 22nd studio album !!! following "Detroit Stories", issued in 2021.

Again produced by his "partner in crime", Bob Ezrin, it's a very simple rock 'n roll concept, life (& death) on The Road (=touring).

Guitars: Ryan Roxie, Tommy Henricksen and Nita Strauss.

guest: Tom Morello on "White Line Frankenstein"

“White Line Frankenstein is a monster that we created. It’s a truck driver who’s been out there a long time. He's the king of the road. He doesn't live in a house. He lives in that truck,” Alice says. “In the song, this surreal tough guy is driving on white lines for his whole life. So, ‘White Line Frankenstein’ would be his CB handle. It’s monstrous and definitely a stage song.”

politically incorrect song: "Big Boobs", most fun and so are Alice's comments on the Woke movement, so he just got fired from the cosmetics firm he advertised.

my favourite, introspective 110 More Miles (#12, and last song).

cheesiest song, the obligatory ballad, Baby, Please Don't Go -not so much...

Bonus, #13, a personal energetic rendition of The Who's Magic Bus (The Who being Alice's favourite band...)

AllMusic review here: 4 stars out of five.

TBC

you can find the album on all here.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (& the Awesome Mix too;)

Finally Volume 3 is here!

Saw it in 3D and it was a pretty good conversion and a pretty bright one.

For a running time of 2h30 I was afraid it will bore the hell out of me but i was uber pleasantly surprised. It is much more emotional than the first two volumes and more ambitious narratively (no spoilers here but follow the teaser poster;), and it makes me put James Gunn as the best director/creator of universes in the MCU (and DC?), and glad he was back at the helm as Disney fired him back in 2019 for some bullshit remarks and the whole cast of the GotG supported him, especially Dave Bautista. Also as Gunn went into being the boss of DC now and not only because of that a fourth GotG volume will not happen, at least with this original members (& cast). So, I can only say that for me it is the best series (trilogy) in the Marvel Universe, the warmest, funniest and surely oddest! And it Rocks;)

I am Groot!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now the soundtrack, which was the one of the best things about the series, and the innovative way to get it on the incidental side with Quill's walkman and then its improvements. Wrote about them at the time. The first one was the cheesiest, but made it on my top soundtracks of 2014!

https://aldmovieland.blogspot.com/2014/08/guardians-of-galaxy-soundtrack-awesome.html

the second one rocked more for me, and was way more inventive to fill in the film and the narrative -the titles on Mr. Blue Sky (ELO), the analysis of Brandi (Looking Glass), the use of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain and especially Cat Stevens' Father and Son, so yep it went into the top soundtracks of 2017!

https://aldmovieland.blogspot.com/2017/05/guardians-of-galaxy-awesome-mix-vol-2.html

Vol. 3 Awesome Mix is:  way more darker than Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, actually for me with the best selections of songs yet. Very ecclectic but more interesting bands and less cheasier songs.

Creep (acoustic version) - Radiohead

Crazy on You - Heart

Since You Been Gone - Rainbow (grand Rainbow song from 1979's Down to Earth, on a par with Led Zep and Deep Purple's greatest, and a cover ! of an 1976 song by Russ Ballard, as far as I know this is the first appearance of the song in a film!)

In the Meantime - Spacehog (from 1994, I knwe the song but didn't know the band!, the vocal sounds a bit like GnR)

Reasons - Earth, Wind & Fire

Do You Realize?? - The Flaming Lips

We Care A Lot - Faith No More (yes!!!)

Koinu No Carnival - EHAMIC

I'm Always Chasing Rainbows - Alice Cooper  ( I looove the inclusion of the Coop in the soundtrack, with a song from Alice Cooper Goes to Hell-1976, and as coincidences happen, just before going to see the movie I was listening to the Coop From the Inside 1978 album, which I haven't heard since 2019 to be precise !!!) And I'm Always Chasing Rainbows is one of my faved AC songs!

San Francisco - The Mowgli's

Poor Girl - X

This Is the Day - The The

No Sleep Till Brooklyn - Beastie Boys

Dog Days Are Over - Florence + The Machine

Badlands - Bruce Springsteen  (1978, this one I don't get, it plays over the closing credits, nice but a bit pointless, and also it's sort of a dark song, would've loved the Boss doing a new tune for this, yes the idea of the soundtracks of GotG was to be old ones, but on the credits of Vol.2 we got a Hasselhoff and cast remix, so new one)

I Will Dare - The Replacements  (from 1984's Let it Be)

Come and Get Your Love - Redbone (reprise from the 1st GotG movie)

James Gunn says

“I snuck my friends The Replacements (‘I Will Dare’) in there. I snuck Alice Cooper (‘I’m Always Chasing Rainbows’), my hero in there, (and it) actually has a pretty big sequence in the movie.”

The music comes with the words with the script, I write it in, but sometimes I change it − some things on this, it was very difficult choosing the music for this movie because in the first two movies, they were all AM, ’70s pop hits.”

Technology introduced at the end of “Vol. 2,” courtesy of Yondu’s gift of a Microsoft Zune digital music player to Quill, expanded that character’s music knowledge and, thus, the song possibilities.

“It's music from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, 2000s, and I could choose from anything,” he said. “It's at the end of ‘Hurt Locker’ with him looking at all the stuff on the shelves and not knowing how to make this choice, so it was very difficult because of that.

Gunn keeps a list of hundreds of songs that could potentially go in one of his films (see the Peacemaker series which made me discover the excellent and irresistible cheesy  Wig Wam-Do You Wanna Taste it?, which put the Norwegian band back on the map) .

Needless to say, with something that extensive, not every tune will make the cut because it’s a matter of how the song fits into a scene.

“‘Cruel To Be Kind’ by Nick Lowe has been on every list that I've had for the movies, and I've just never found a place to work it in,” he said.

Alice Cooper-Social Debris -SOTD & LMA !

Alice, Vincent, The Coop is 73 Today ! LA multi ani/ Happy B-DAY !!!

I was celebrating him listening to his breakthrough  album KILLER, 50th anniversary (out Nov. 1971), produced by meister Bob Ezrin, great MF revolutionary album ! Long time, no hear- Halo of Flies,  Desperado, Dead babies... wawawiwa :)

He put out a new single from the upcoming album, Detroit Stories, out on Feb. 26. Previously I have blogged on Song of the Day (SOTD) about Rocknroll, the album's first single, here.

SOCIAL DEBRIS is a song recorded with The Alice Coper Band, the title Social Debris, which fits well the ugly picture of 2day 2.

Alice Cooper "Rock & Roll" (SOTD)

Just one week ago this new Alice Cooper song was released, "Rock & Roll" , from the upcoming album Detroit Stories, out on February 26th 2021.  For  week i'm struggling to post this but finally...

---The song sounded familliar , sure, why ? Its a cover of the Velvet Underground song  "Rock & Roll" , composed by Lou Reed in 1969 and out in 1970 in the album Loaded and a part of his later repertoire. So, investigating further, co s Alice changes New York station with Detroit station, surely, where Rock n roll was heard by Jenny, when she was 5 years old :) . There was a cover by Mitch Ryder with his band Detroit in 1972, with Detroit instead of NYC on the lyrics. So Alice's cover is more this one than Lou.  For completists, there's also a Runaways (The) cover of this song, with LA station instead of the mentioned above. Can't wait for more of Alice's Detroit Rock n roll stories...

Jenny said when she was just five years old
There was nothin' happ'nin' at all
Every time she puts on the radio
There was nothin' goin' down at all, not at all
Then one fine morning, she puts on a New York station
You know, she don't believe what she heard at all
She started shaking to that fine, fine music
You know, her life was saved by rock and roll.

Jesus Christ Superstar-Alice Cooper as King Herod !

Happy Easter !
Alice Cooper Superstar ? Alice as King Herod in the new version of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert  that was broadcasted  in the USA on NBC last night ! 1300 people in the live audience, in an armory in Brooklyn, and  9.4 milion views on live TV !
the vaudeville song with Alice now reminds best of Last Man on Earth from his sequel album, Welcome 2 My Nightmare !

might be the rockiest and most interesting version yet ! of Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice's best musical -actually a still provocative rock opera- from 1970 ! Great production design, directing, cast and guitars...three :) !
John Legend is Jesus !!  So now he's Legend :)
And Brit actor Ben Daniels is a mean Pontius Pilate !
The whole thing is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land), which explains better the choice of John Legend !
interview about the project and character with Alice, here !
***
Variety tho didn't enjoy JCS and the duration of 2 h20 (40 minutes of commercials, saw the thing without at 1h40,  credits included). With one exception, of the Coop's performance, which at 5 minutes could be more of a cameo, though he's billed the third -and last- on the top billing -after Jesus and Mary Magdalene (Sara Bareilles)!

The musical was intensely earnest, often endearingly so. The entire cast, a multi-cultural tribe who looked as though they just left a loft party at 3 a.m. hungry for more adventure, was as energetically sincere as they could be almost all of the time. The exception was Alice Cooper, who stole the show when he emerged in an orange suit. But that adjective doesn’t begin to describe what he was wearing. Cooper’s threads looked like there were made out of flames — that’s how vivid and pleasingly eye-popping his tailored suit was — and yet the singer easily outshone his clothes. His rendition of “King Herod’s Song” was a star turn of the highest order, and a delightful amount of fun. If you can’t enjoy a dapper, devilish rock-god Herod surrounded by dancing ladies clad in outfits a Vegas showgirl would kill for, then perhaps live musicals on television are just not for you. (Your loss.)
*
Vulture judged it a  grand success ! while they didn't like the Coop so much they judged it like this:
NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Set a New Standard for Live Musicals (title)
Minute for minute, NBC’s Easter spectacle was one of the most impressive things I’ve seen in the 20-plus years I’ve been writing about TV. (...) This Superstar was the closest that live television has come to creating a hybrid new form, combining elements of epic cinema, the stage musical, and the concert film. It’s a minor miracle.
*
New York Times loved the show and the Coop:
"...moments of startling clarity, including: Alice Cooper’s magnificently scenery-chewing performance of “King Herod’s Song”

Top albume 2017

Top ALD albume 2017

& more 2017-
Topul de seriale aici
& topul de filme -s -aici
& topul soundtracks aici
& topul de concerte aici

v Top 5 in revista Sunete iarna.
Sincer, atât de puţină muzică  bună sau atât de puţină muzică nouă care să mă impresioneze nu am ascultat în nicun an, ever.

1.    Chuck Berry-Chuck
De ce ? Pentru că Chuck. So long, Chuck !!!

2.    Alice Cooper –Paranormal
De ce? Pentru că-Alice Cooper. E ca si cum ai bea o bere cu un prieten vechi. Album scurt funny, energetic. Tongue in cheek. Alice (sau Vincent Furnier ) face 70 de ani pe 4 februarie. 2018.
Paranoiac Personality aici

3.    Roger Waters -Is This the Life we Really Want ?
‚Stop and Smell the Roses’ indeed (care sună ca Time de pe Dark Side of the Moon). Roger Water are 74 de ani.

A rush. De la prima piesă, Doom or Destiny *cu Joan Jett, la ultima, Fragments, care spune: „You can't create more time, you just make it/If you want a new life, just take it/And if you wanna change the world then speak real clear/And make sure someone's listening, listening”. We do.

5. Mike Oldfield -Return to Ommadown

6-10 -in ordine Aleatorie-

 Lindsay Buckingham & Christine McVie-

Randy Newman -Dark Matter

LIVE album of the Year:
Chickenfoot - Best and Live, cu  noua piesa- Divine Termination !

Mentiune-sau- always Rundgren :)
Todd Rundgren -White Knight (disc de colaborări)
-din nou War on Drugs nu a facut topul.;)
Discovery of the Year - Headstones !
(Canadian punk/ rock band -better 30 years later than never....)
albumul lor din 2017-Little Army !
