The Running Man (2025)

The new Running Man, is not a remake pre se of the Ahnuld 1987 vehicle, but a more faithful adaptation of Stephen King as Richard Bachman novel, written in 1973, published in 1982. That novel happened in the year 2025 and actually today it happens, with the Squid Game series and a Korean Reality show named exactly Running Man. So Ben Richards is in a banal world, becoming more real every day. I mean, it's like Y-day news after the Hunger Games series and all the Tv/straming fare of this kind. 

Running man is of course influenced by Rollerball, which still stands up as one of the best film of its era (not the shitty unnecesaary reamke) it's even worse tha n its remake.

Everyone's commenting, oh, it's an Edgar Wright film. Ok, that is like a certified value for a big budget blockbuster Sf action  (110 mill. $). surely not. I was also very dispointed by Lst Night in Soho, his take in gialllos, very pretentios and shallow. The most action Wright directed was in Baby Driver, which I enjoyed most of his all films, and he's better in making quirky, funny, heartfelt little films, not Hollywood fodder.

Also Glen Powell, which I've just seen in the lastest SNL edition, can't carry the film., at all. Not a problem with the guy and he tries hard but neh.

This would've worked as a Snake Plissken adventure, like Escape fromn the Dome. I guess Wright gave a few nods to John Carpenter. 

There's also a problem with the duration which is overlong, 2h13 min, oi, the film doesn't start until we get to the show and no matter how good Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo are, they can't help much.

Also this world, used and dirty, used to cost less to produce on the screen. Here they went to Bulgaria for exteriors and day shots. Somehow doesn't look like America. The rest of it was hot at Warner Bros' studios in England.

Now for the music, unimpressive loud score by Steven Price. And as Edgar Wright ia great fan of songs to use on the soundtrack (yeah, great in Baby Driver), here most of them are wasted. Rolling Stones'  Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker), Sly and the Family Stone (Underdog)-on the main credits, Iggy and the Stooges (Search and Destroy), The Allman Brothers (Revival) , Miles Davis (Red China Blues) and Tom Jones (Keep on Running) on the end credits. Including a riff of The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (last heard appropiately in One Battle After Another). And Jamie XX, far from my desk ;)

It's been Stephen King's year all over, from Life of Chuck to Welcome to Derry, the IT prequel that runs now on HBO MAX, MGM's The Institute series, passing through The Monkey and another Bachman opus, The Long Walk (which I liked best of these all, my review here). 

Wright's film is full of King references /Easter eggs for the eyes of King's fans and King himself, credited as an executive producer. Of course King was happy with the film, as I know his tastes in film (ex: how much he hated Kubrick's The Shining and managed to to a sequel just to get rid of that Kubrick hangover, I don't care so much about what he likes or does not cinematically...hey, what about that Maximum Overdrive?

RIP David Johanson

David Johanson from The New York Dolls to his alter ego Buster Pointdexter is gone. He was 75 (born Jan. 9th 1950). No more "Personality Crisis"... Amazingly he lived to be 75 while his bandmates (Johnny Thunders, Sylvain Sylvain, Arthur Kane, Jerry Nolan, Bill Murcia) and the other tough & rough dudes of the era are long gone and buried. The Dolls reunion album (only Johanson and Sylvain) in 2006 was entitled prophetically, "One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This".  , (which incidentally I found & bought at the time on CD in Romania !).

Martin Scorsese (with David Tedeschi) directed a rockumentary, more like a concert film, Personality Crisis: For one Night Only for Showtime, in 2023.

it's a one night allshow with Johanson singing, crosscut with archival footage, interviews- talking funny about his life, a sort of comedic one, as his sense of humor was absolutely great !

He is one of the BIG ONES, of the stature of Iggy and the last of its time, only Patti Smith is still here....unfortunately the world today (hah..what world ?) has forgotten those wild dayz and wild people. Cos it seems they only cahanged t for a while, changed themselves and some of us, and the rest still conformed and zombified. Can't put Your Arms Around a Memory, oh yes, you can !!!

Sugar (2024)

Sugar is described as "a genre-bending contemporary take on the private detective story set in Los Angeles".

Apple tv+ new noir series SUGAR by Mark Protosevich (The Cell) divided people because of its gimmick.  It's L.A. Noir with a Twist. And it's a show for cinephiles with a cinephile dick and lots of classic noir films quoted directly on the screen (Kiss Me Deadly, Double Indemnity, Night of the Hunter, The Big Heat, Sweet Smell of Success, Sunset Blvd. and many many more -see the whole list here.).  

Colin Farrell is great as John Sugar, a private eye roaming LA in his superb blue 1966 convertible Chevrolet Stingray Corvette, but there's more than meets the eye (sic) in this 8 parts neo-noir series (short episodes, 30 mins.) as opposed to Ripley or Fallout or The Sympathiser's 1 hour + durations-named here the series I enjoyed this year so far, plus The Gentlemen). And I was waiting for each epsidode, so I watched this every week, for a period of two months, having heard from before starting it that it had a twist, quoted by The Guardian as terrible. Well, it's quite the opposite, great and new and brave.

Well, I for one, enjoyed it very much. Maybe because I so much like Colin Farrell and his (sad) smile, and his gaze. Farrell is great whatever he's in, either being Alexander, The Way Back, In Bruges or its L.A. version,  Seven Psychopats, even a lesser London Boulevard.. arthouse: Lanthimos' The Lobster but better in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Ondine, Triage, The Beguiled, up to the grand summit- The Banshees of Inisherin,   

in True Detective season 2 -or unrecognizable (great too!)  in the new Batman (waiting to see his turn as The Penguin in his own series), even aa a cameo (in Gilliam's Parnassus).

And Amy Ryan  (which I recentley rediscovered in Gone Baby Gone), as an old rocker (Patti Smith, Blondie, Joan Jett style- who would believe her as that? ), was great, mature, warm.

Plus the dog is fabulous (and the cat).

And mr. James Cromwell, as an old Hollywood tycoon.

Series directed by Brazilian Fernando Meirelles (which went from his Cidade de Deus to great American TV)-5 eps. & Adam Arkin (Alan Arkin's son, an expert streaming series director- Succession, The Offer) -3 eps.

Great soundtrack too, with cool songs, some known, some obscure. Whole list here. Very nice use of Iggy's The Passenger.

Veni, vidi, vici ?. Cu greva de taxiuri care au blocat autobuzele, cu avion

intirziat de ploaie, cu luat trenul de la Nisa impromptu, cu coada la

presa si controalele de securitate omniprezente. Am reusit sa vad

Ceremonia de deschidere in paralel, la sala Debussy, am intrat cam

penultimul. MC Eduard Baer funny, juriul serios, cu Elle Fanning

radianta, Pawlikowski si Lathimos intelectuali, cu prezentare de clip

Innaritu (monsier le president), Charlotte Gainsbourg sexy si Javier

Bardem sobru, au declarat deschis festivalul si apoi a urmat filmul lui

Jim Jarmusch. Ceremonia a fost transmisa simultan de Canal + si in sali

de cinema, nu mai putin de 600, si filmul a intrat tot atunci aici, premiera

mondial, in SUA va intra pe 15 iunie, in Romania nu e anuntat !

The Dead Don‘t Die e filmul de deschidere care cel putin a polar-izat -

sic-v. polar; la iesire a inceput o ploaie mocaneasca-cea mai

noua intrare a genului zombi, si deconstructie de gen de tip Jarmusch-

comedic-parodic-nihilist. Avind in vedere deconstructiile lui anterioare

de gen ma asteptam la ceva mai destept si mai special dupa un generic

cu nume glorioase, cam o intreaga distributie irosita. Iggy Pop are un

cameo iar Tom Waits un extended one, sau ideea era sa nu mergem la

pomul laudat cu asteptari maxime. Probabil ca imi va creste in timp

perceptia pozitiva pentru ca muzica lui Squrl, trupa de garaj punk a lui

Jim Jarmusch, citatele din Romero -de la primul cadru -si alte refeeinte,

si o tona de filne de gen, dar nu pare a fi un film de competitie Cannes

si nici de ouverture. More like a stunt...adica nu au luat ei The Limits of

Control care era poetic si arthouse frenchy si au dat iama la DDD (Dead

Don’t Die), inteleg ca are star value, ca doar l-a luat Universal in

distributie, dar asta a cause de Bill Murray, Adam Driver aussi, intr-un

triunghi de politisti locali din satucul Centerville, USA, care o include si

pe Chloe Sevigny-care nu prea are ce juca-, toti trei ochelaristi, un soi

de reminder Ghostbusters cu zombi. In rest filmul se vrea meta-cu

auto-referinte si rupe cel de-al patrulea zid (the Fourth wall) cu

publicul, clins d’œil, si este extrem de sec. Tilda Swinton se remarca

intr-un impecabil accent scotian. Titlul e dat de piesa country a lui

Sturgill Simpson, compusa special pentru film (el are si un cameo), si

care e un gag recurent de-a lungul filmului.

Top Soundtracks 2017

Acest articol a aparut in revista Cinemap de iarna mai extins si in Sunete, ca si recenziile anterioare.

Am încercat să fac un top al celor mai playabile Soundtrack-uri ale anului, dar cu siguranţă (pentru mine) soundtrackul anului este albumul lui John Carpenter, Anthology: : Movie Themes 1974-1998 cu piesele din filmele sale, reeditate şi reorchestrate alături de fiul său Cody şi finul său Daniel Davies. Mult mai rock decât originalele, sunt, 13 piese din 13 filme, pe disc în ordine de la In the Mouth of Madness la Christine, piesă la care Carpenter (acum în rock star mode care tocmai şi-a încheiat propriul turneu american, v. cronica mea la concertul său londonez în revista Sunete de iarna trecută) a făcut un videoclip  nou, straşnic. De pe Big Trouble in Little China, (v. Thor: Ragnarok) faimosul antemic Porkchop Express. Deci pe locul unu, mr. J.C. !!!

2.    King Arthur: Legend of the Sword–Daniel Pemberton

–cel mai prost sau printre cel mai proaste filme ale anului (regia Guy Ritchie),  dar best soundtrack, inclusiv piesa popish The Devil and The Huntsman de Sam Lee (cântăreţ englez de folk), compusă cu Daniel Pemberton. Mi-a plăcut şi muzica lui la Gold (alt film cam praf, cu piesa-titlu excelentă a lui Iggy Pop), dar ea este din 2016, deci l-am scos de pe listă. Pemberton a apărut pe lista mea de best soundtrackuri în 2015 cu The Man from U.N.C.L.E. pe locul 1, alt film prost al lui Ritchie, dar parfum faţă de hipsterismul din Regele Arthur şi legenda sabiei lui. Şi cu 2 ani înainte cuThe Counsellor al lui Ridley Scott.

3.    Brawl in Cell Block 99 - Jeff Herriott &  S. Craig Zahler

Albumul este o compilaţie de piese originale din film, care apar şi incidental şi pe generic, compuse de Jeff Herriott alături de regizorul S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk, unde şi acolo şi-a făcut muzica) interpretate de Butch Tavares, Adi Armour şiThe O’Jays. Sunt 7 piese, originale care sună ca unele vechi, din filme de blaxploitation, dar asta e şi ideea, cheesy, mai ales textele: God Bless My Mama ???

Cel de-al treilea film și cel mai bun film al lui David Leitch (John Wick) este  o poveste de spionaj pe fundalul războiului rece și căderii Zidului din Berlin în 1989, Bazat pe romanul grafic The Coldest City /Cel mai rece oraș (2012). Charlize Theron este uimitoare și irezistibilă, o letală blondă Debbie Harry care îl interpretează pe David Bowie ca un Bond bisexual in lumini decadente și violente de Neon. Blonda platinată aduce și cu Michelle Pfeiffer în Scarface, combinată cu Anita Pallenberg și Nico. Legătura Bowie merge și mai departe de Berlin, orașul unde a compus Low and Heroes, în Cat People, piesă folosită și de Tarantino în Inglorious Basterds, dar făcută celebră de filmul lui Paul Schrader din 1982. Producția a vorbit cu Bowie cu puțin timp înainte de moartea lui și i-a oferit un rol în film, care din păcate nu a apucat să îl facă. Coloana sonoră include Under Pressure, hitul Bowie / Mercury și un cântec Peter Schilling intitulat Major Tom. Şi tot germane, Der Komissar, piesa lui Falco, dar în varianta trupei engleze After the Fire, care au avut un hit cu ea în America în 1983 şi piesa Nena, 99 Luftballons, cu ea şi în super-interpretarea Kaleida. Score de Tyler Bates (John Wick, Watchmen, Guardians of the Galaxy), ale cărui trei piese apar pe soundtrack, plus una cu Marilyn Manson, cover la Stigmata, piesa Ministry. Şi hituri optzeciste la greu, I Ran (So Far Away) cu A Flock Of Seagulls (pe care o cînta Ryan Gosling la party open air în La La Land, Blue Monday cu HEALTH, Cities in Dust cu Siouxsie And The Banshees şi The Politics of Dancing cu Re-Flex. Father Figure cu George Michael, Voices Carry cu 'Til Tuesday, London Calling cu The Clash (în film mai apar Fight The Power cu Public Enemy, Behind the Wheel cu Depeche Mode, dar nu şi pe soundtrack).

6.    Guardiansof the Galaxy vol. 2 - V.A.

7. Thor: Ragnarok Mark Mothersbaugh.

Fostul lider al trupei-cult DEVO a devenit în ultima vreme un compozitor de filme de A în Hollywood, de la Wes Anderson la desene animate (Hotel Transylvania, The Lego Movie). Dar umorul său atipic continuă să infuzeze conţinutul muzical. Aici e disco-electro-popul cu sound de anii 80, Preia teme din John Carenter electro, chiar şi clapa tematică din Escape from New York (pe piesa Flashback). Regizorul Taika Waitiki spune că inspiraţia sa de bază este Big Trouble in Little China, filmul-cult al lui John Carpenter din 1986, aşa că lucrurile sunt clare. Mothersbaugh integrează temele anterioare din Thor şi Avengers, compuse de Patrick Doyle şi Brian Tyler. La piece de resistence pe ecran în 2 secvenţe (nu apare pe soundtrack), Led Zeppelin- Immigrant Song, fundalul sonor pe care eroii Marvel se bat cu monştrii din Valhala şi nu numai. Ragnarok rocks !

8. Good Time - Oneohtrix Point Never

În competiţia oficială la festivalul de la Cannes de anul acesta am descoperit un film interesant, curajos, aproape experimental. Good Time: film independent american care aduce cu ce se făcea în anii ´70, cele ale lui John Cassavetes, sau Mean Streets al lui Martin Scorsese. Robert Pattison e excelent în rolul unui delicvent cu un frate autist, interpretat de Benny Safdie, unul din regizori (fratii Benny si Josha Safdie, aflaţi acum la al treilea lungmetraj). Muzica ultra cool de compozitorul experimental Oneohtrix Point Never (brooklynezul Daniel Lopatin)  a luat si premiul Cannes Soundtrack de anul acesta,. Piesa de pe genericul final, The Pure and the Damned  este cu aportul lui Iggy Pop la voce şi versuri (a doua piesă de generic a lui Iggy de anul ăsta, după Gold, v. poziţia #1 din top). Pe net găsiţi şi videoclipul, regizat de fraţii Safdie, cu Iggy animat ca rocă, Robert Pattinson, o sabie şi ceea ce pare a fi o marmotă moartă care rânjeşte.

9./10. Dunkirk & Blade Runner 2049 -Hans  Zimmer

Ambele sunt de fapt soundscape-uri, de ascultat acasă ca muzică trebuie să fii mazochist, de aceea le pun pe 9 şi 10. Aportul lui Benjamin Wallfisch este esenţial. La Dunkirk muzica, compusă de Hans Zimmer (cu ajutorul lui Benjamin Wallfisch-Variația 15) a creat un sound design ultra-special, care fac atmosfera filmului, după cum spunea un prieten: ar trebui creditat pe generic astfel: –”un film de Christopher Nolan și Hans Zimmer”. La Blade Runner 2049, unde l-au înlocuit pe compozitorul original, islandezul Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival), au reușit cu brio să meargă pe urmele scoundscape-ului inventat de Vangelis. 

Let Me Make You a Martyr (2016)

acu'daca tot am vazut filmu'cu Iggy a trebuit sa recuperez si filmul cu Marilyn Manson ! dupa cum cred ca v/ati dat deja seama, am intrat la recuperiele de anul acesta, filme mai mult sau mai putin obscure, pe care nu le veti vedea in vreun cinema.
adica:


titlul ultra-pretentios, Let me Make You a Martyr.

Filmul e produs de casa de productie  Iscariot  (shortul lor din 2014 se numea Judas'Chariot)!
Scris si regiat de duo-ul Corey Asraf & John Swab, cu crowdfounding. Manson e si co-.producator.

noh. ce sa zic, cam ultraboring, pina la pointul final, acest artsy neo-noir, dar Manson e cool as Pope, un killer singuratic cu principii filosofice. Existentialist. povestit intr-un soi de flashback in interogatoriu, purgatoriu, lui Charon (Michael Potts), de catre fiul risipitor, Drew (Niko Nicotera) care vrea sa isi omoare tatal, de fapt taica-su, Larry (Mark Boone jr./si co/producator) vrea sa il omoare pe el. Familia se numeste Glass, probabil penru ca e atit de fragila, perisabila ca sticla, mai e si o sora pe nume June (Sam Quartin).

ca si soundtrackul, care mi-a facut cunostinta cu DEMON FUZZ, o trupa engleza de prog rock, cu albumul lor din 1970 Afreaka !, cu piesa Hymn for Mother Earth-de 2 ori, si coverul lor la I Put a Spell on You.
Dupa momene lungi de asteptare  la sfirsit filmul devine psihedelic total.

Blood Orange (2016)

a lesser bigger splash...Blood Orange.
an English version of La Piscine meets the beginning of the Sexy Beast (thesetting of the Spanish villa, the pool)

the only worthy ingredient: The Igg, Mr. Iggy Pop. Iggy is Bill, a rock star who is half-blind and chases rabbits. His young and almost always naked wife (whose great talent is how she swims), Kasey Clarke, is a little promiscuous and screws with the boy who cleans the pool - Antonio Magro / another cliché. The former boyfriend Ben Lamb also appears. Iggy can not act too much, and he does not have much to do with what he got. As the Guardian says, "Unfortunately, it also demonstrates his pronounced limitations as an actor, even when playing a variant on himself." Toby Tobias's movie (a podcast with him here) is mediocre at best, and if you want to see a rock star on an island and a pool, you see A Bigger Splash, one of my favorites from last year. 2 out of 5, 4 out of 10.

on the end credits, Tim Arnold's song Money Kills Love, its credited neither to Iggy but found a version on youtube that says so. my shazam and soundhound says it's Tim Arnold, whose other song is The Devil's Interval -theme of Blood Orange-with sax and piano, a cool one but instrumental, using the musical interval that Lygeti used and Kubrick put it in Eyes Wide Shut.

Iggy Pop is 70 today !
planned to celebrate him on Doc and Roll fest with GIMME DANGER doc and still do, but in November. Meanwhile he shows up in Danny Fields doc, Danny Says, and recently he penned the movie GOLD's main song from the soundtrack, a great song composed together with Daniel Penberton, Danger Mouse and Stephen Gaghan (the director).  Great song !

o fi tirziu, deja in ianuarie dar anul trecut am publicat si mai tirziu.

am avut ceva de catch-up, de unele din ele (Santana de ex), am auzit abia pe 30 decembrie, din Classic Rock-ul german),

datorita faptului ca Metallica's Hardwired to Self-Destruct e pentru mine cel mai bun album al lor de la Master of Puppets incoace si o intoarcere la roots, anume primlee 3 allbume, sound-ul la Kill'em All & co, am sa il declar albumul anului. Prea lung, dar se poate asculta in 2 bucati. Si Murder One, in special pentru Lemmy !

Iggy Pop-Post Pop Depression va trebui sa intre pe locul 2, pentru ca dpdv istoric Metallica e mai eventful. Tho, I love PARAGUAY ! (cronica la albumul lui Iggy am scris-o in Sunete-le de vara)

stiu ca unele reviste au declarat albumul anuluii BLACKSTAR al lui Bowie (Uncut),

....altele COHEN, YOU WANT IT DARKER (Mojo). Imi place maxim piesa-titlu si TREATY dar e o contiunare a celor 2 albume anterioare, Popular Problems -2014, si Old Ideas -2012-si totodata o Coda.
