RIP Phil Campbell

Phil Campbell was Motorhead's last guitarist, on a series of greats (Larry Wallis, Wurzel, "Fast" Eddie Clarke), survived by only Brian Robertson (70 now).

Official Motorhead announcement:

He was Motörhead's guitarist for 31 years (the longest serving member aside from Lemmy) having joined in 1984. After Lemmy’s passing, he was blessed to form Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons with his sons Todd, Dane and Tyla, which recorded and toured together for years.
Phil was a wonderful guitarist, writer, performer, and musician who had Motörhead in his veins. He always led with his gift of guitar, and carried a great sense of humour, but most of all, Phil led with his heart. You could not be around him without a chuckle or twenty, because quite simply, Phil loved life and lived it with great joy.
There will be plenty of time for us to share stories -tales of Campbell glory- and some damn good jokes together; for now, please send love and positive energy to Gaynor and the boys while affording them time, space, and privacy.
Much love and RIP Phil. The world has just lost an enormous beam of light, and we are devastated.

Saw Phil on all the dates with Motorhead I got to see and with his band, Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons in 2018 at Qunatic club in Bucharest. Last year they opened for Guns 'n Roses on the National Arena in Buch. They played Suceava in 2024 and REF too in 2023.

Phil Cambell was just 64 !!!

Caught Stealing (2025)

Darren Aronofsky is an arthouse favorite from Pi to The Whale, passing through The Fountain, Black Swan and The Wrestler), and this Caught Stealing might be his most commercial film yet. But that's not a bad thing. At all.

Taking cues from the Coens and Guy Ritchie, he revisits New York of 1998 in a dark irreverent comedy thriller complete with an English Punk mohawk, a cat, Russian mobsters and two Rabbi killers.

Written by Charlie Huston, based on his book from 2004.  It's actually the 1st book in a series of three, about the character Hank Thompson. If Caught... (great Romanian Title, Prins cu mata-n sac....NOT) is a hit. Hopefully it will and Butler will carry on.

A major influence, as also checked is After Hours (Scorsese, 1985), see the video in the comments.

Very cool cast, including Griffin Dunne from After Hours, who could be actually the same character, Paul, Village bar owner, mentioning Lou and Andy ;), Austin Butler (his third important lead, after Elvis and The Bikeriders), Zoë Kravitz (Blink Twice), Regina King, rappers Bad Bunny & Action Bronson and brit Matt Smith. Plus the fantastic duo of Liev Schrieber and Vincent D'Onofrio. Another fantastic duo, the Russians -Nikita Kukushkin (Microbe)  and Yuri Kolokolnikov (Alexei). Also featuring Carol Kane. But the absolute highlight is Bud the Cat, played by Tonic.

Shot by Aronofsky's regular, Matthew Libatique in 1.85: 1. Some impressive camera moves and angles, great location value, NY truly lives in every shot. Lots of graffiti dressing. Libatique shot this back to back in NY locations with Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest.

Songs by post-punk band Idles, score by Rob Simonsen. Including a cover of Police and Thieves, made famous by The Clash in 1976. Some Bowie references, a lot of pop culture around, all soundtrack songs here.

RIP David Johanson

David Johanson from The New York Dolls to his alter ego Buster Pointdexter is gone. He was 75 (born Jan. 9th 1950). No more "Personality Crisis"... Amazingly he lived to be 75 while his bandmates (Johnny Thunders, Sylvain Sylvain, Arthur Kane, Jerry Nolan, Bill Murcia) and the other tough & rough dudes of the era are long gone and buried. The Dolls reunion album (only Johanson and Sylvain) in 2006 was entitled prophetically, "One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This".  , (which incidentally I found & bought at the time on CD in Romania !).

article and obit in The New York Times

In film, he was the Ghost of the Christmas Past in Scrooged (1988), Bill Murray being a friend of his.

*

Martin Scorsese (with David Tedeschi) directed a rockumentary, more like a concert film, Personality Crisis: For one Night Only for Showtime, in 2023.

it's a one night allshow with Johanson singing, crosscut with archival footage, interviews- talking funny about his life, a sort of comedic one, as his sense of humor was absolutely great !

He is one of the BIG ONES, of the stature of Iggy and the last of its time, only Patti Smith is still here....unfortunately the world today (hah..what world ?) has forgotten those wild dayz and wild people. Cos it seems they only cahanged t for a while, changed themselves and some of us, and the rest still conformed and zombified. Can't put Your Arms Around a Memory, oh yes, you can !!!

Lucero-Bikeriders (SOTD)

Now in the film The Bikeriders (my thoughts here)

Lucero is Ben Nichols' band and the song is from 2005's Nobody's Darlings album. Based on photojournalist's Danny Lyon book The Bikeriders (1968).  See the photos in the video below.

Kathy met a girlfriend at a place around Grant,

Swore if she got out alive she'd not go back again,Fellas didn't know her and they scared her half to death,Hand prints on her jeans, she would have just got up and left,That's when she saw Benny standing over by the bar,Sat back down, and waited 'til he came over to talk,Later on that night as she was walking out the door,Benny started up his bike, and the boys came out for more
Ooooh...
They picked her up and put her on the back of Benny's bike,Now Kathy's been with Benny Bauer ever since that night,She's tried to leave him many times, can't quite get away,Seen more jails and courts and laywers than she'd like to say,Benny's always been a fighter, that'll never change,Kathy takes him home and heals him up, it's all the sameHe made it from the club room all the way out to the street,They beat him with the barstools but he made it on his feet
Ooooh...
Kathy's runnin' to her boy, picks him up and takes him home,And Benny's crying "Kathy please, I'm sorry don't you know?"I'm sorry don't you know, I'm sorry don't you know?At a bar they call Stop Light the fellas drink their beer,Women with their hair done up, they make it very clear,Which one of the fellas is all theirs and can't be touched,They're tellin' me that motorcycle rider just give up,They're talkin' to the pretty ladies, everyone they can,I never seen the trouble caused all by just one dance,If Benny don't get himself shot tonight I wish he did,When he gets home
Ooooh...
Now Kathy's datin' Benny and he keeps her by his side,Kathy's still the cutest girl these boys will ever find,Riders line up BSA's out on the scrambler's tracks,Levis jeans and a leather jacket numbers on their backs,Benny's bike is too big to race up 250 class,They make him start way up the hill, up by the railroad tracks,Tomorrow they'll all ride across the Illinois state line,Motorcycle Blessing at the St. Christopher Shrine
Ooooh...
Kathy's walking out the door leavin' Benny all alone,And Benny's crying "Kathy please, baby don't you go"Baby don't you go, baby don't you goKathy you mean it this time, just leave in the middle of the night,His wallet's on your table, boots on your floor,The car is parked right outside your back door,So leave him asleep in your bed and,You're halfway to Chicago before good-bye is said
Ooooh...

LMA Alice @76 !

“I know you’re looking for a real good time. So, let me introduce you to a friend of mine. I’m Alice.

I’m the Master of Madness; the Sultan of Surprise…so don’t be afraid, just look into my eyes.”

Vincent Damon Furnier aka Alice, the Coop, is 76 today ! La multi ani, hope to see ya again soon !

Just mentioned him on Wayne Kramer's obit cos Wayne played and contributed with songs on Alice's album Detroit Stories (2021). Like this one:

Go Man Go

Also on the album is Sister Anne, the MC5 song, composed by Fred "Sonic" Smith.

Alice's albums, esp. the ones I'm day and date with, the last 20+ years (mostly from The Last Temptation -1994, his return to form, onward) are always on my Top albums of that year. And last year it was ROAD, a great Meta Alice album about the Life on the Road.

RIP Wayne Kramer

One of the greatest musicians and guitarists, gone but not forgotten? Unfortunately not many know his name and work today.

A musician's musician, Wayne Kramer was one of the founders of MC5, a very ephemeral but iconic group, proto-punk, and more political than the whole rock scene of the day. They put out three albums forever to "Kick Out The Jams". That was the title of their first, a live album in 1969. Then Back in the USA and Hight Time, 1970 and 1971. They disbanded in 1972.

Kramer was radical, he was political, a leftie of course, he became a junkie, did time in jail for selling drugs, converted, played free jazz, punk, put very deep meaningful lyrics to rock and roll. His solo work I love most, from The Hard Stuff  to Dangerous Madness, Citizen Wayne and Adult World.

He played last on Alice Cooper's album, Detroit Stories. He was planning for an album of new music, produced by Bob Ezrin. Wayne Kramer was 75. LLMF...

Auto-biography here.

                     "Wayne S. Kramer 'PEACE BE WITH YOU' April 30, 1948 – February 2, 2024."[

"His band the MC5 basically invented punk rock music... Wayne came through personal trials of fire with drugs and jail time and emerged a transformed soul who went on to save countless lives through his tireless acts of service." (Tom Morello)

RIP Shane MacGowan

He did his share, my share, your share, everyone 's share....Shane, Shane, Shane...

Shane MacGowan dead at 65...his last years were tough as his health was in tatters...I saw him in Dublin in June 2019 when The Pretenders opened for Fleetwood Mac and Chrissie Hynde brought him on stage to do an emotional upbeat cover of "I Got You, Babe" with Shane. He was in a wheelchair :(, touching moment that now has a totally different value...(u can see the video here )

Shane was the lead of Irish Celtic punk band The Pogues. Just to be clear.... Founded in King's Cross, London, in 1982, as Pogue Mahone – an anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic phrase póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse".

Amazingly they pulled one of the most beloved Xmas songs, Fairytale of New York. Like a drunken Tom Waits song, featuring the singer Kirsty Mc Call who died in a freak accident in  2000 at 41!!!!    For me it wasn't this one or One Rainy Night in Soho, but Summer in Siam. And Dirty Old Town

Later on they kicked Shane out of the band for not showing up too many times. That was in 1991 in Japan. He started another band, Shane MacGowan and the Popes. The Pogues dissolved in 1996.They put on two albums without Shane. They regrouped in 2001 with MacGowan, playing hecticly 'til 2014. During the '00's MacGowan started doing heroin, when booze and smokes were not enough. Sinead O'Connor denounced him to the coppers. MacGowan didn't mind. He knew she, troubled mate soul of his, was right. Well, she died before him  (this July no less) and was only 56. Since 2015 he was permanenetly in a wheelchair. He had viral encephalitis but he died of tuberculosis.

Shane MacGowan was born on Christmas, on Dec. 25, 1957. He died on the night of November 30, at 3.30 am. We were partying Pogues style. Life...

Obit in The Guardian, here. And a grand (really!!!) rare interview also in The Guardian, here.

And just found out there is a documentary about him, produced by Johnny Depp and directed by Julian Temple, Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan, released in 2020. Special Award of the  Jury at San Sebastian festival that year. Watching it tonight, the rounds we had last night with crazy and manic friends, just the way Shane would've loved to go...

Here comes BABY DRIVER, the mother-F of all soundtracks, 71 songs no less ! and th gretest excuse to play all of them in the film, as the biggest plotpoint ! Danger Mouse (featuring Run The Jewels and Big Boi) – ‘Chase Me'

My biggest surprise and fun was to knock myself off with Hocus Pocus by Dutch band Focus (from 1971's Moving Waves aka Focus II), one of my favourite songs (and one of the best of alltime) since back in 1982/3 when i heard it for the 1st time (also one of the Free Europe Metronom show anthem)-so a song that purely expresses Freedom for me, now for the second time in a film, after the Robocop remake in 2014.
-The story of the song is told here by Focus' Tjih Van Leer on the verge of the Nike World Cup commercial which put the song on a new map in 2010. And you can see the band in its greatness. Saw it live with Jan Akkerman four times, eversince back in 1995. Yep. When i got to interview him in Brasov in 2013, I told him that I always thought this song will make a great film sequence, and yes, I saw it now. A shoot-out Heat (M.Mann) style, edited on the music and a bullet ballet, emphatic and overdramatic. Kudos, Edgar Wright !
*I still have my own shot with Iron Maiden's cover of the song :)
Here a mega-interview with Edgar Wright about his  influences & the songs in the film !!!
and here some more and specifically he talks about this one:
"I found out about Focus from this music show that ran in England for ages called The Old Grey Whistle Test – they did a performance of that song on there that blew my mind. I'm not a big prog rock fan, but I do love fast prog – the sheer musicianship you need to play that kind of stuff that fast is impressive. I think this was a Top 10 hit in the U.S. … which is pretty unusual for an instrumental track that features yodeling. The studio wanted to cut it. I had to use my own money to pay for two extra days of shooting so we could get it – and it's my favorite bit in the film. I always thought it'd be great if you made a car chase movie, and then have one of the most explosive scenes in the movie be a foot chase. People have asked how I picked the tracks for Baby Driver, and this is a good example. If you had a dance track or a rock track that had a similar tempo all the way through, it's actually not that helpful. Whereas the reason that something like "Hocus Pocus" ends up becoming a key track in the film is because you can hear that, Ok, this is part of a running scene – it's like your best cardio track ever. But it also has these stop-start intervals in it, so you can let a scene dictate itself according to the track: Ok, here are the fast guitars, he's running. Wait, there's yodeling breakdown here, so this is where he's hiding behind a tree, catching his breath. Wait a second, we're gearing up for another guitar part – so here's where he starts running again, and in the next breakdown, he's hiding in a mall. Hold on, there's an accordion breakdown – so now he's breaking into a car. You're able to take a 1970 song like that and write a complete action sequence in 2017." (Edgar Wright)
                                                                           *
Go see Baby Driver on the big screen with the sound cranked at max !  It's a clasic !!!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 2

Guradians Vol. 2 is out ! and it's gonna sell a lot of records ! Or just make more people listen to some great songs ! loved the teaser poster in which they all look like a punk group esp. due to Michael Rooker (Tandu)'s electric mohawk ! actually I think it's a riff on the Ramones cover of Rocket to Russia !

Image result for guardians of the galaxy vol 2Related image
The film itself is funnier and more emotional than the 1st one (though overlong) and has the ELO song "Mr. Blue Sky" as the 1st one was supposed to have "living Thing". I'm glad Jeff Lyne is getting more consideration, after American Hustle where he actually had also original songs...then Sweet and Fleetwood Mac, Cheap Trick (more of a rocking approech) a and a very touchy Father and Son -Cat before he was Yusuf...better choice of songs than the 1st one !!!  Baby Groot dances exquisetly and Kurt Russell is great as EGO ! To be seen on the Big screen (IMAX if possible) ! We Are Groot !!!
