Oscars 2025 (#97): the Show

the Show -my notes:

23 awards to go til 6.10 am ;)

It starts with Somewhere over the Rainbow, it goes into the Wicked songs with the freakish Cynthia and Grande.

Conan O'Brian (hosting for the 1st time), is actually very good, natural with a good sense of pacing. With a little help of Adam Sandler and John Lithgow. Then surprise, he sings s a song, “I won't waste time”, featuring dancers, the sandworm from "Dune" on piano doing “chopsticks” and Deadpool.

Robert Downey jr. presents supporting actor and the least deserving guy gets it, Kieran, who is the same in life as in A Real Pain, as in Succession, kinda same part. Nice speech tho, talking to his wife.

He also looks like a young Kirk Douglas. Glowing eyes.

(commercial break #1)

Wow ! For Animation FLOW wins. Wonderful, Touching ! Lithuania enters the Oscars. Great film, now in Romanian cinemas, go and see it !!! Absolutely sensational, it beats Disney, Pixar and The Giant Robot.

The short animated category I didn't follow. “In the Shadow of the Cypress” won. The two Iranian directors are great ! They just landed in L.A. Three hours ago, they said.

(commercial break #2)

Costume design, no surprises there, Wicked, the first black person to win for costume design.

Another commercial break, # 3

Original script. Sean Baker wins his 1st Oscar for writing Anora. Adapted, Conclave. No surprises here.

Surely The Brutalist and The Substance and September 5 were better choices but I'm happy for Baker.

Commercial break, # 4, man, there's more breaks than show...

June Squibb and Scarlett Johansson present the makeup and hairstyling award to The obvious The Substance.

Then we get Halle Berry to let us know the Governer Ball's Awards (November 2024), from Quincy Jones (posthumous) to the Bond producers of EON, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson (who gave a way bond to the sharks from Amazon :() -Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

and then we get a 007 tribute clip followed by a dance extravaganza with a superb Margaret Qualley (as I said before, on her way in becoming a A-lister, after OUATiH, Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, The Substance, Drive-Away Dolls), in a red dress, then we get renditions of Live and Let Die with Lisa , Diamonds are Forever with Doja Cat, Skyfall with Raye, all in good taste, channeling the originals.

Commercial break, # 5

Nice joke of Cinemastreams, Conan featuring Marty Scorsese.

And a anniversary of Kill Bill puts Daryl Hannah on stage. She looks great, presents the award for best Editing. Again, Sean Baker rocks (2nd award !), Anora for editing ! Deservingly.

Divine takes the stage for the supporting actress award presentation. Zoe Saldana wins. Emilia Perez was here, will she win for International film too ?

Commercial break, # 6

Ben Stiller on stage with a joke stolen from SNL Vincent Price skit (& Peter Sellers & more), present the Production Design Award. Wicked". May the Biggest budget film win. And a film about architecture, nem...

Then on the sound of Sympathy for the...who ?, Sir Mick Jagger shows up. Best Song award. Making Bob jokes. El Mal from Emilia Perez win. Sorry, I couldn't care less. The nominations this year for song were awful.

Commercial break, # 7

Conan does the second Dune Sandworm joke, playing harp ! Sam Jackson (L.) and Selena Gomez (M.) present short documentary film. The Only Girl in the Orchestra wins. Feature: No Other Land. Political moment speech.

Commercial break, # 8

Conan & the L.A. Firemen Dpt. Firemen jokes.

Miles Teller & Miley Cyrus (in Europe Kilometer & Kilometry). Sound. Dune 2.

Gal Gadot, herself a special FX, in a red dress present the Visual Effects Award. Dune part 2 it is.

VO/announcer (in my heydays it was Peter Coyote ;) -Nick Offerman, who's voice is kinda off (booze?).

Commercial break, # 9

Ana de Armas and Sterling K. Brown present the last short award.

Morgan Freeman presents an homage to Gene Hackman. He played together in Unforgiven and Under Suspicion. That introduces the In Memoriam montage I had no clue Fred Roos and Adam Somner. died ..).

Commercial break, # 10

An actor presenter from each film nominated for Cinematography: Joe Alwyn for the  Brutalist. Alba Rohrwacher salutes a Ed Lachman in a wheelchair for Maria. Willem Dafoe for Nosferatu, Zoe Saldana for Emilia Perez, Dave Bautista for Dune part 2. Lol Crawley wins for The Brutalist. Fair enuff.

Penelope Cruz presents for Best International Film. I'm Still Here/ Ainda Estou Aqui wins (Walter Salles, Brazil). Another big loss for EP, due to bad PR mostly.

Commercial break, # 10

Conan makes another Russian Joke via Anora. Mark Hamill (!!!) presents the award for best Original SCORE. Daniel Blumberg for The Brutalist. Well deserved for a Grand, epic score !

Whoopy and Oprah introduce a Quincy Jones musical tribute. Queen Latifah sings a song from The Wiz.

Commercial break, # 11

Conan: "If you still enjoying this show you have what it's called Stockholm Syndrome".

Cillian Murphy takes the stage for best actor award. He won last year for Oppenheimer. And...Adrian Brody wins his 2nd Oscar (22 years after 2003's The Pianist) for the part of architect  László Tóth in The Brutalist !!! The most touching moment of the evening. Brody is entering a cool restricted club. Egészségedre !

Enter QT, Quentin iz in ze house ! Best director -ta-dam, Sean Baker for Anora ! His 3d Oscar, suddenly a small struggling indie director becomes a Monster Superstar in the biz. Phones will be ringing, snakes will be crawling, emails will be flowing, agents will be waltzing around & mirages will be presented to him but I have the feeling he won't sell out. Kudos !

Commercial break, # 12

Emma Stone (who won last year for Poor Things) presents Best Actress award. Aaaand surprise, Mikey Madison (Sadie in OUaTiH) wins !!! Anora's fourth Oscar ! Mikey is 25 !

Meg Ryan & Billy Crystal present Best Film. And Anora wins !!! Five Oscars out of Six ! Sean Baker is also co-producer so he gets his fifth award. Bravo !

And they even finished earlier this year ! Sorry for Demi, that was this edition surprise for me. 62 vs. 25. Baby Jane or All About Eve ? Again the SAG proof that no one guesses is perfect. The acting awards were again different from those of the guild. All in all it was a calm and cool edition with the most indie films in an Oscar race, two foreign directors, and wins for Anora 5, Brutalist 3.

That's it, folks !

The Gorge (2024)

Would've been nice to see The Gorge on the big screen, but it's streaming fodder (Apple+).

The leads are charismatic, Milles Teller (Whiplash) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa) and they have chemistry, which helps a lot. It's also a loves troy, between two isolated snipers, one burned-out American (Teller), one Lithuanian (Joy) on watch on towers on both sides of a mysterious isolated Gorge.

The story remined me of many films, The Mist, the combo of WW2 films of action and horror with experiments gone wrong (The Bunker, Outpost, Frankenstein's Army, Overlord, Biatlov Pass, etc).

Plus the riff on the corporate evil (Resident Evil;), Sigourney Weaver in an office with the Baku Flame Towers on her back ;)

Scott Derrickson's (Sinister, Doctor Strange) direction here is good, but I guess it's the story and screenplay that rised the bar (written by Zach Dean). Location helps, gorgeous mountain scenery (in Norway, Wales and Durham County in UK).

Score by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, and good songs onto it. Rockin', grooves-The  Watchtower by Devlin & Ed Sheeran, Twisted Sister, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Ramones, The Dead Weather.

afterthoughts, "The Hollow men" and the other creatures in the gorge inspired by Polish surrealist painter Zdzislaw Beksinski. Which art is most fascinating and I suggest you dig further in.

Kris flew in...

«Everything was very copacetic. Everything was all right until — until — Kris Kristofferson came to town. Oh, they ain’t seen anybody like him. He came into town like a wildcat, flew his helicopter into Johnny Cash’s backyard like a typical songwriter. And he went for the throat. Sunday Morning Coming Down. Well, I woke up Sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn’t hurt. And the beer I had for breakfast wasn’t bad so I had one more for dessert, then I fumbled through my closet, found my cleanest dirty shirt, then I washed my face and combed my hair and stumbled down the stairs to meet the day. You can look at Nashville pre-Kris and post-Kris – because he changed everything» – Bob Dylan, 2015

RIP Norman Jewison

Norman Jewison was one of the most serious & eclectic directors that ever were. We was versatile in all genres but he cared for social and political issues and made important films, like his peers, Sidney Lumet, Mike Nichols, Sydney Pollack, his contemporaries. Like all of them he started his career in Television, in the Fifties. He survived his era and was retired long ago now, his last film being 21 years ago (The Statement, 2003). He died at 97 years of age without winning a single Oscar -he was but nominated Seven Times...

Jewison could've done just three films and he would've made history, and film history. In the Heat of the Night, Jesus Christ Superstar and Fiddler on the Roof. Others can say The Cincinnati Kid or The Thomas Crown Affair, the two films he did with Steve McQueen, his friend but also his most difficult actor (as he said). I'd say also Rollerball, with a brilliant James Caan. Amazing film even today ! Weird that John McTiernan remade two of his films that didn't need any remake at all.

1st film of his saw -in Romanian Theaters- was And Justice for All (Dreptate pentru toti)-1979, with a hectic Al Pacino. We call this movie now, And Justice for Al ;)  Also In the Heat of The Night (In arsita noptii, 1967), I saw on the cinema but on a re-run, a film about Racial prejudice that made Sidney Poitier famous as detective Tibbs and a brilliant Rod Steiger as chief Gillespie, he won an Oscar for best lead-these days that would've been supporting part (while Poitier wasn't even nominated :( ), great score by Quincy Jones, title track by Ray Charles, and it's another one of those films who directed itself-no director win, but won 5 Oscars: for best film, best script, and gave Hal Ashby his only Oscar-for editing, 5 awards in total !!!

In the 80's he made less interesting and engaging films, except Moonstruck (1987) which had a fabulous showcase for a young Nicolas Cage and 3 Oscar wins-one for Cher, also the pic got awarded the Silver Bear in Berlinale.  In 1999 he did The Hurricane, about the boxer Rubin Carter, wrongfully accused for murder and imprisoned hard, another story of Race and social injustice, with a grand Denzel Washington (that he kinda discovered and pushed into A Soldier's Tale -1984), film that introduced me to that brilliant Bob Dylan "Hurricane" song. Denzel was nominated for an Oscar for this and won best actor in Berlinale.

Last film of his I saw was The Russians are Coming The Russians are Coming (1966), a re-watch last year due to the death of Alan Arkin which is fabulous in this underrated and forgotten comedy cold war classic (close to Billy Wilder's best).

I was a big fan of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), which was a big hit for us on video and I saw very late Fiddler on the Roof (1971), on a private screening and a night to remember with it's biggest fan, in his flat, a certain director which I love very much ;)

All in all, Norman Jewison was one of the Greats. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Too bad...but grateful for all the films he did and I loved. RIP...

RIP Robbie Robertson

sad day today, even sadder than 2 days ago when Billy Friedkin passed...

Sixto Rodriguez is gone also (but that was y-day on the 8th)...

just spoke about The Band 2 days ago, considered by many the best band ever, and last year or so I saw the doc focusing on Robbie Robertson's and The Band, Once Were Brothers...he was one of the Great ones, played with Bob,  probably Scorsese's best friend in the seventies and more, he's rejoining Levon Helm, Richard Manuel and Rick Danko on that Last Waltz...all dead but as Neil says it, not forgotten...

listen to Beautiful Madness from his SINEMATIC album, a very personal one...also loved Robbie's work for Marty, his album from 2011, How To Become Clairvoyant, and his theme song for The Irishman (2019) also Rememberance, the second song, also from Sinematic.

His final score will be heard this fall when Scorsese's latest KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON releases.

and here's Scorsese tribute to the Man, in Esquire....

Rolling Thunder (1977)

Rolling Thunder.

USA, 1977.

with: William Devane, Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Haynes, Dabney Coleman, Luke Askew, James Best.

written by Paul Schrader. Re-written by Heywood Gould.

produced by Laurence Gordon.

Directed by John Flynn.

Not to be confused with Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue. And the doc by Marty Scorsese.

Tarantino had put it on his top ten films list, said is his favorite Revenge flick, he named his distribution company after it. He dedicated a whole chapter in his book, Cinema Speculation to this film (and another one to another John Flynn's classic, The Outfit -1973).

RT was supposed to be a 20th Century Fox release but they were so appalled so they sold it to AIP (American International Pictures).

It's one of the earliest entries into the "Angry/dissilusioned Vietnam Vet coming home" genre, a gritty revenge film which strikes close to Sam Peckinpah and Walter Hill. Schrader disowned the script, which was at the time, a companion piece to Taxi Driver! Travis Bickle even makes a cameo appearance in the original Scharder script, linked to Linda Lovelace...

I saw the film more than 10 years ago, out of the Grindhouse folder of fame, and Tarantino was the biggest advocate and champion of Rolling Thunder, making it more and more known, and made it intriguing to people to search for it and see it. Which brings it to the latest showing, in the Tarantino's surprise film in his guest spot in the Quinzaine des Realisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival (his first time there!) just a week ago. https://www.rogerebert.com/festivals/cannes-2023-close-your-eyes-quentin-tarantino-at-directors-fortnight

So, it made me yearn to see it again. Und I did ;)

Devane is brilliant, I know him from my childhood when I saw him in Yanks (1981). Loved the guy, deserved a bigger career. Tommy Lee Jones is cool too, but mostly I liked Luke Askew's Automatic Slim (I Know Askew as a baddie I guess from Cool Hand Luke and in my childhood, Walking Tall II).  The film is slow, gritty and seems less exploitation than it was described back in his premiere days, it grew older in a good way. Of course it's not 'the shit" as QT sees it, but it stands Tall on its own. Great title too.

And I just love the opening and closing song, the country elegy "San Antone", sung by Dusty Brooks. I know it from one of my favorite films, obscure and underrated, The Ninth Configuration (1980), directed by George Peter Blatty, based on his novel Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer, Kane. And that's because of Barry De Vorzon, who composed the song and the score for both of these movies.

Rolling Thunder: 7 out of 10, 3 1/2 out of 5!

"You learn to love the rope".

LMA Bob Dylan @80 !!!!

Bob Dylan is 80 today ! Amazing !!! Unbelievable ! Forever Young ! Are you Younger than that now ? Nah ? Why bother ? The times were a changing into the hellish worse, so why ?  Only another songwriter/hero/poet in the same league made it over 80,  and that was Leonard Cohen.  Well, Eric Burdon just got 80 this year too (May 11) and Tom Jones (last year in June) but they ain”t Bob or Lenny :)..

Last year I posted about Murder Most Foul, his dark poem on the death of JFK and lots else ramblings, and that was that. That is amazing, yes dudes it is !

A lot of my friends don't dig Dylan, the voice, the whining, the this the that. Well, as i told em, buzz off. Now, more than ever, leave me alone (und they did ;(

Bob is Bob, Bob is unique ! A poet, a pirate, a bootleger, a great promoter of his own enigma. Nobel and Oscar, too yep ! Took me many years to love him at his best, understand and care for his riddles, not take him seriously when he's at his most cryptical joker.

He's been there all my life (OK, not when I was ten), but big over 35 years. Saw him in Frankfurt, missed him in Prague (missed the plane MF :(), came twice to Bucharest, was there but never met him face 2 face, bought his albums everywhere, read about him in Uncut where he was their absolute hero, argued and promoted him everywhere (DocandRoll par ex, No Direction Home, the 4 hr doc on him by Scorsese). And then there is the Rolling Thunder Revue by Scorsese on Netflix, one of the latest works on film on him (and it's great) !

Happy Birthday, Bob !  All Along the Watchtower !!!

*as we know from Big Mike, 'Bob is a Cool Guy' ! Tru !! And he's also 80 Now !!! :)

Rolling Stones -Living in a Ghost Town (SOTD)

News on April 24th, Friday after Easters-after Bob Dylans Murder Most Foul, another rock legend(s) and Trexs, the -Old gods, almost dead-their Satanic Majesties ....The Rolling Stones release Living in a Ghost Town . their first new song since 2012 ! Cisstomised for the CH19 sitauation the video presents an empty London. The șlyrics go like this:

“Life was so beautiful / Then we all got locked down … Please let this be over / Stuck in a world without end.”

Elsewhere, Jagger sings of chaos (“Glasses were all smashing / Trumpets were all screaming”) and societal collapse:
Preachers were all preaching
Charities beseeching
Politicians dealing
Thieves were happy stealing
Widows were all weeping
There’s no beds left for us to sleep in
Always had the feeling
It would all come tumbling down.
more details on The Guardian, here.
Living in a Ghost Town was apparently the product of recent recording sessions. By Jagger’s account, the lyrics were already eerily prescient – “about being in a place which was full of life, and then now bereft of life ... full of plague terms” – but were reworked to suit the current moment. They are certainly a far better attempt at coming up with something contemporary and newsy than A Bigger Bang’s clumsy Sweet Neo-Con or indeed Jagger’s Skepta-assisted solo single England Lost.

Bob Dylan-Murder Most Foul (SOTD)

*
...what better time than now (that is y-day, Saturday 28.03.2020), an overlong dark and bleak song about apparently JFKs death, and more so about pop culture, name dropping galore, and finally about the CH 19 pandemic...
**
title comes from Shakespeare's Hamlet act 2,
(Ghost): Murder most foul, as in the best it is.
But this most foul, strange and unnatural.
                                                                 ***
-Bare with patience and listen to the lyrics, they're on the screen,
It's Dylan-s longest song 2 date (17 mins) and his 1st original material since 2012s Tempest.
Of course, like all things Dylan, “Murder Most Foul” isn’t for everyone. It’s length alone will be off-putting to all but the most diehard Dylanologist. (NBC News, comparing it with The Irishman of songs ;)
must be a sign, wrote about this rambling on for an hour, saved it, and now erased it by myself....
Uncovering Epic Song by Bob Dylan ‘Murder Most Foul’ Lyrics Meaning
Play "Love Me or Leave Me" by the great Bud Powell
Play "The Blood-Stained Banner", play "Murder Most Foul"

Bob Dylan-Shadows in The Night

'No anger, just resignation'
(Bob D.)

Noul Bob-ness (#36), e the great american songbook all over, dupa Christmas in the Heart (2009), e al doilea album de cover-uri, si primul album dupa Tempest (2012).
Elegiac, cum zicea LH , Too "Slow". Nah, Bob are numai 73 :)
Albumul iese oficial 'soon after midnight"- (pe 3 februarie). Columbia Records.
recenzie in The Guardian.: – pre-rock songs imbued with romantic regret -4 / 5 stars

Top 10 soundtracks 2014

Top 10 Soundtracks 2014
1. Grand Budapest Hotel -Alexandre Desplat
2. Interstellar –Hans Zimmer
restul nu au neaparat aceasta ordine
3. The Homesman-Marco Beltrami
4.Nightcrawler-James Newton Howard
5. Fury-Steven Price
6.Exodus-Gods and Kings-Alberto Iglesias
7. Noah_Clint Mansell
8. Godzilla-Alexandre Desplat
9. Under The Skin-Mica Levi
10.The Amazing Spider-Man 2-Hans Zimmer & The Magnificent Six

It works.

si mai ciudat; Under The Skin. Atmosferic, dark.

Ar fi putut fi Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix daca erau piese originale. Awesome mix, tho :)

Bob is OK...

So how was Bob, my friends are asking me ????

“Nothing is revealed”....
OK , and to reveal all, friends and dudes, and ladies and GF's (old and new, ex's and former lee'warmers), not my mom though :(
Well, the moral of the story
The moral of this song
Is simply that one should never be
Where one does not belong
So when you see your neighbor carryin’ somethin’
Help him with his load
And don’t go mistaking Paradise
For that home across the road

This limerick is for my friend-o TUCO

Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Silver Linings Playbook (in rom.
David O. Russell e un regizor ciudatel cu modele in Hal Ashby si Robert Altman, al carui singur film "normal" a fost comanda Three Kings, in rest a facut acelasi tip de comedii romantice zanatice cu personaje disfunctionale (Spanking the Monkey, Flirting with Deaster, I Heart Huckabees) si a revenit in atentia Oscarurilor cu The Fighter in 2010 (cronica mea aici).
Nimic special altfel.

Soundtrack
Cooper & Lawrence danseaza ca in White Nights, Barysnikov si Hines (sic), muzica de Danny Elfman, dar soundtrackul e la greu cu piese refentiale, care de care mai romantice: de la Stevie Wonder (My Cherie Amour) , la MonsterMash (cu CrabCorps), Goodnight Moon (Ambrosia Parsley The Elegant Too), Hey Big Brother (Rare Earth), Girl From The North Country (Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash), The Moon Of Manakoora (Les Paul & Mary Ford), la West Side Story (cintat de Dave Brubeck Quartet, care mai au si Unsquare Dance), si trece pe partea mai heavy la Led Zeppelin (What is And What Should Never Be), Jack White , Alabama Shakes , Eagles Of Death Metal. Piesa Silver Lining e cintata de Jessie J.
Metallica si Megadeth sunt mentionate doar verbal :)
