Hold Back the Dawn (1941)

Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett wrote it at the time of their legendary partnership. Ketti Frings wrote the novel on which story, the dynamic duo have much improved it. Boyer tries to make it his own, especially as a Foreigner with a lovely accent (his own, which he kept all his life !). For Romanians it's a blast, cos' he is a crook / gigolo from Bucharest named George(s) Iscovescu !!! 

Studio man Mitchell Leisen directed it professionally. The year was 1941 and immigration was at its WW2 boom. Iscovescu wants to get in the USA and he needs a passport and a citizenship and in order to get those he needs to marry an American. The film premiered on September 11th 1941, just three months before Pearl Harbor !

The two women in the film are opposites, each with its role, Paulette Goddard as the femme fatalish Anita and Olivia de Havilland the innocent Ingenue Mrs. Brown. 

Supporting characters, from Curt Bois as Bonbois, to Walter Abel's  Inspector Hammock, Victor Francen as Vander Lucken and Nestor Faiva as hotellier Flores, the story is told in a flashback from the stage / set of a film at Paramount, on which Iscovescu/ Boyer went to see to director Dwight Saxon, played by none other than director Mitchell Leisen in order to see this story (maybe the most modern aspect of the film, predicting Sunset Boulevard ?) !!!

Very long for those day's standards (116 mins.) and heavilly plotted, it has a bleaker tone for a romantic  melodrama and a downbeat immigration angle. And a small dose of film noir (esp. for the self-person narration). The dialogue is sharp and some witty and cynical one-liners are already trademark Wilder.  Brackett and Wilder were very dissapointed with the result and Boyer's refusal do do a dialogue with a cockroach, they cut off most of his lines, giving them to Paulette Goddard. Also  I read this was the last film Wilder wrote without directing it (even though Ball of Fire for Hawks opened in December 1941...).

Hold Back the Dawn was nominated for 6 Oscars back in 1941, including best film, best screenplay and best cinematography (in Black&White, Leo Tovar). 

3 1/2 out of 5 ! 7 out of 10 !!! (loses steam due to the duration, otherwise would've been an Eight!)

Together (2025)

New entry in the Body horror genre, after the recent The Substance, this is the debut feature of writer/director Michael Shanks. Liked it more than the overrated Bring Her Back. For me the other interesting horror fodder this year include 28 Years Later and Weapons. 

Together is an ambitious little horror flick, with themes of love and obsession, about a couple that moves in a little village house, far from town, and a mysterious pit in the woods.

Dave Franco and Alison Brie are married in real life so the intimate scenes have more power, intensity and authenticity than with other actors.

Supporting is Aussie Damon Herriman (The Nightingale, OUATIH, The  Bikeriders), and when he's on screen you know something ain't right ;)

Shot in Australia in only 21 days. Debut at Sundance Film Fest in Jan. 2025. Was presented even in  Locarno film fest !

Powerful score by Cornel Wilczek. End song, Another One by Golden Suits (2016). 

The effects are good for their budget, some morph coming from The Thing and more recently Color out of Space.

Mimì - Il principe delle tenebre (2023)

Mimì - Il principe delle tenebre / Mimi-Prince of Darkness is the debut feature film of Brando De Sica (Italian film Royalty, son of Christian-De Sica and nephew of il grande Vittorio), which was shown in the competition of Dracula film Fest last October in Brasov, Romania. It also won in Sitges. The premiere was in the Locarno film fest in the summer of 2023. Other awards followed.

It's a very spcial film, in the vein of  George A. Romeo's Martin, Nick Cage's Vampire Kiss,  a bit of Les Morsures de l'aube, a bit of  Låt den rätte komma in, etc. The genre he proposes is self-titled Napoletano Gomhorror neomelodico. A very specific Napoletan (including lots of pizza) film, very stylish with nods to the vampire genre, Nosferatu F. W. Murnau film, Hammer pics, giallos.

It's a combo of comedy, drama, doomed teenage love story and  coming-of-age horror. The protagonist Mimi is a misfit with a  handicaped foot, a (Tim) Burtonesque character,  coming straight from Tod Browning's Freaks box (here a Pizza box ;) mixed with Italian realism and mostly surrealism. And pizza ;) 

Great sound design by the director himself. And score (by Pasquale Catalano) and soundtrack (songs from Fabrizio de Andre to Four Tops, Halloween House, etc) . Reminded me a bit of the feel of the new horror wave by Tilman Singer, Cuckoo, from last year fodder.

It streams now on MAX worldwide. Also in Romania.

The Gorge (2025)

Would've been nice to see The Gorge on the big screen, but it's streaming fodder (Apple+).

The leads are charismatic, Milles Teller (Whiplash) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa) and they have chemistry, which helps a lot. It's also a loves troy, between two isolated snipers, one burned-out American (Teller), one Lithuanian (Joy) on watch on towers on both sides of a mysterious isolated Gorge.

The story remined me of many films, The Mist, the combo of WW2 films of action and horror with experiments gone wrong (The Bunker, Outpost, Frankenstein's Army, Overlord, Biatlov Pass, etc).

Plus the riff on the corporate evil (Resident Evil;), Sigourney Weaver in an office with the Baku Flame Towers on her back ;) 

Scott Derrickson's (Sinister, Doctor Strange) direction here is good, but I guess it's the story and screenplay that rised the bar (written by Zach Dean). Location helps, gorgeous mountain scenery (in Norway, Wales and Durham County in UK).

Score by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, and good songs onto it. Rockin', grooves-The  Watchtower by Devlin & Ed Sheeran, Twisted Sister, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Ramones, The Dead Weather.

afterthoughts, "The Hollow men" and the other creatures in the gorge inspired by Polish surrealist painter Zdzislaw Beksinski. Which art is most fascinating and I suggest you dig further in.

L'amour Ouf (2024)

L'amour Ouf / Beating Hearts in English, Iubire fara limite in Romanian. In competition (!) at last years' Cannes film festival, French star Gilles Lellouche adaptation of a Neville Thompson novel is in Romanian Cinemas now. 

Great on the big screen (widescreen!), operatic, with a superb score and soundtrack, great cinematography, this is the most American French film in a long time, and that's a good thing imo. In Cannes they kinda hated the film -of course, oh la la), way too commercial for them to enjoy it if it's not made by Tarantino or James Grey...

Epic running time: 2h46. 1st cut was 4 hours though.

It's based (loosely) on the 1997 best-selling Irish novel "Jackie Loves Johnser OK?" by Neville Thompson, whose French title is "L'Amour Ouf" ( a pun on the expression "L'Amour Fou", also a film by Jacques Rivette from 1968).

Uneven, pastiche, but highly energetic and frenetic this is not a prefect film, far from it, but I loved the energy, the musical rhythm (greta songs, from The Cure to Billy Idol, to Sirius by Alan Parsons project, cuts from John Carpenter's from Escape rom New York score, closing on Foreigner-Urgent!!!), from the opening lettering and the pulsing dramatic score by Jon Brion (with whom Lellouche worked on his second film as director, Le grand bain/Sink or swim). 

Shades of Tarantino and Wild at Heart. And of course West Side Story. And Scorsese's touch. And maybe Lelouch too ;)

L'insoumis (1964)

L'insoumis (1964) or The Unvanquished (in Engish) an early gem in Delon's filmography, little seen but famous for one shot in pop culture, The Smiths' album cover The Queen is Dead (1986).

A political thriller/film noir/doomed existential love story by arthouse auteur Alain Cavalier (Therese), and the only film Delon did with him. It is the first from Delon's production company (his first too, Delbeau) and it seems the film was a flop then and AD had an injury during filming, so he wasn't so happy with it at that time. But the film grew-given the further influence of a final shot into an iconic cover I suggest you to go for it. This is a one to (re)visit, especially now with the final dissapearence of "Le fauve", le Grand Delon.

I found it on youtube in a very good copy, with burned English subtitles.

There is a little bummer, this cut has 101 mins, and the original cut is supposed to have 114 mins.  I understand the cuts were made by the French then, this is the film released by MGM, with whom Delon had a 5 picture deal at the time. Alternate English title, Have I the Right To Kill.

Written by Cavalier with Jean Cau, based on a real story, though they said it's not (and got sued by the real judge person).

Exquisite black and white Cinematography by Claude Renoir.

Great music score by Georges Delerue.

1961. Delon is Thomas, a Luxembourgois Legionnaire, deserter from the Algerian war (still superhot at that time, this is even before Battle of Algiers-1966), is recruited by the OAS to kidnap a young judge (Lea Massari) that came from Lyon to Alger to defend two Arabic "terrorists". And he somehow falls for it...

Love Lies Bleeding (2024)

Love Lies Bleeding (2024) is a mesmerizing little film that has it all, bodybuilding, crime, gun nuts, lesbian love, revenge, rednecks, and Bronski Beat's "Small Town Boy". Just that here there's Small Town girls. 

Love Lies Bleeding is also a cascading Red flower, but the title could come from a Don De Lillo novel. Or not. Just learned that the film was originally set in Scotland but moved in the USA for "scale".

Set in 1989's New Mexico.  Kristen Stewart's performance as Lou is so intense, but I've seen her before in Spencer, Seberg, Personal Shopper, Clouds of Sils Maria doing arthouse, here she does the perfect Indie performance, with a high note of her real sexuality. But the revelation of the film, with a background of real body building, is Katy O'Brian as Jackie. Also Anna Baryshnikov, the daughter of maestro ballerino Mikhail Baryshnikov, stands out as blonde Daisy. Dave Franco as JJ is good too. And man, Ed Harris as Lou senior, is in super evil bad mode. Which is perfect. His hair extensions are a standalone highlight.

LLB opened at Sundance Film Fest to rave, then it went to Berlinale.

Rose Glass writes and directs stylishly and with a certain peculiarity, it's her second film after Saint Maud (2019, which I'm gonna check), shades of Wild at Heart but with an LBGT, Flashdance, Thelma & Louise, Near Dark and even Rust and Bones. She brought with her from Europe (Brexited England that is) her Saint Maud cinematographer, Ben Fordesman, who does a great widescreen job (2.39.1) in Americana scope. 

Great atmospheric music score by Clint Mansell (known better as Darren Aronofski's composer), plus songs of the period. Discovered some cool obscure or cultish tunes, that work perfectly in the film-Nona Hendryx-"Transformation", Gina X "Nice Mover", & "Kaddish" included.

LLB it's now in Romanian cinemas (as Dragoste, minciuni și sânge), limited release, see it there !!!

IM 18 !!! Restricted to all Minors ! In the US it's Rated R.

RIP Anouk Aimée

Anouk Aimée  is no more. She was 92. From Anne Gauthier in Claude Lelouch historical Nouvelle Vague film Un Homme et une Femme (where she was nominated for an Oscar, though it was a Foreign film and it was the year 1966 !), through Lola (1961, which was a subsubject in the latest Nani Moretti film), Model Shop (1969, another Jacques Demy film, in which she was Lola and that is an inspiration for Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and one of the women of Marcello in Fellini's masterpiece metafilm 8 1/2 (1963) , also a bit part in La Dolce Vita (1960). Another great part was in Bertolucci's 1981's La Tragedia di un uomo ridiculo, next to Ugo Toganzzi. Best actress at Cannes in 1980 for Marco Bellochio's Salto nel Vuoto (A Leap in the Dark)..

She was the wife of Albert Finney from 1970 to 1978. 

Anouk partnered up with Trintignant for also the sequel of Lelouch's film, Un Homme et une femme: vingt ans  déjà (1986), but also as Anne Gauthier in her last film, toujours avec Trintignant et Lelouch in 2019 in Les Plus Belles annees d'une vie. 

French arts & culture are in mourning after Francoise Hardy and Anouk Aimée.

Phantom Thread

With Phantom Thread Paul Thomas Anderson gave us a masterpiece ! A poisoned fairy tale, a technicolor noir, a sickest but shattering love story, a real cinematic phantom thread ("never cursed ";).  Wow !

From the opening lettering form, it looks like it's made especially for the lovers of grand cinema (all the Hitchcok references-Rebecca, Vertigo, Suspicion-plus Pygmalion, Powell & Pressburger), of course we can't see it in 70 mm as projected but still, do yourself  favor and see it in the cinema !
The technicolor and the shades of lights and colors (Paul Thomas Anderson served also as a DOP) and Jonny Greenwood's music (his fourth score for PTA) , now all symphonic and strings and wall to wall on the film, raising the emotional level, plus a brilliant sound design-very important for Woodcock's world and lets'not even talk about the costume and set design.


Plus the triangle acting of Daniel Day Lewis-Reynolds Woodcock, Luxemburg revelation Vicky Krieps-Alma, and Leslie Manville as the big sister Cyril.
6 Oscar nominations and still it won't be PTA's time (same as in 2007's There Will Be Blood, his best film, this being close to second to me), especially I liked Greenwood's score over that of Desplat.

very sweet, very restrained, very sad film.
opened in Sendance this year, heard about it a few days ago when it came on this year's lists of Best films. Very reluctant at 1st of the look of the Casper ghost and of the Ghost like synopsis was still intrigued of  how Cassey Affleck can carry a movie with a sheet over him...
here Lowery talks about the 10 films taht influenced his film, the lokk and the context. Included are Spirited Away and Poltergeist.

Cat People (1982) este remake-ul filmului omonim al lui Jacques Tourneur din 1942. La exact 40 de ani distanta, Paul Schrader face un film straniu, cu sensibilitati de pop art si un erotism flamboyant (plus tusa de incest), cu o distributie stranie dar spellbinding-Nastassja Kinski (as Irena Dubrovna, numele vine din filmul original), Malcolm McDowell, Annette O'Toole si...John Heard, pe muzica electrica a lui Giorgio Moroder, cu care Schrader a facut si American Gigolo (1980). Un score senzational, atmosferic, nominalizat la Globul de Aur (ca si piesa-titlu-Oscar robbed).

Scenograf (production designer) este genialul Ferdinando Scarfiotti (omul lui Bertolucci-Conformistul, Ultimul imparat, The Sheltering Sky, dar si Barrocco de André Téchiné), creditat la fel ca si la Scarface al lui De Palma ca "visual consultant", pentru ca nu era in sindicat. Culorile de orange, si verzuliu predomina, asigurind conceptul vizual extrem de special.
Piesa lui David Bowie, Cat People (Putting Out Fire), (compusa de Moroder) este de-a dreptul incendiara, Tarantino a refolosit-o in soundtrackul de la Inglourious Basterds intr-un moment -cheie.

E unul din filmele mele preferate din adolesecenta, prima oara l-am vazut la video, alb-negru, prin 1984, si eram pe vremea aceea (ca si acum :) indragostit de Nasty (ce nu face un Tess la cinema la vremea lui :), Bun companion cu The Hunger, care iese un an mai tirziu, al lui Tony Scott. Are un onirism aparte si un erotism senzual pervers - se simte pasiunea regizorului pentru starul sau (Schrader a avut o idila tumultoasa cu fata lui Kinski pe platou), si un parfum de decadenta si subversivitate.

"Previously, I've made films about daydreams - this is my first film about nightmares . . . It's about what goes on when the lights go out - the unconscious world inhabited by erotic fantasies, and what Cocteau [Jean Cocteau] calls the 'sacred monsters' . . . When you're dealing with the fantastic, you need a place where people would accept it (the myth) . . . Vertigo si Body Double azi la Cinemateca Patria!

Capodopera absoluta a lui Hitchcock, Vertigo (1958) azi la Cinemateca Patria! ora 19.00. Exact la un an de la proiectia de la Cannes Classics, in prezenta actritei Kim Novak, la a 55-a aniversare, Vertigo la Brasov !

Dupa noul top al revistei Sight and Sound din 2012, Vertigo e filmul nr. 1 din toate timpurile, detronindu-l pe campionul de pina cum, Citizen Kane (1941). Am scris atunci ca prefer rifful lui Brian de Palma asupra lui Vertigo, anume Obsession (1976). Dar am ales la seria inaugurata de film cult de simbata seara sa dau BODY DOUBLE de Brian De Palma(1984, aniversarea de 30 de ani), care e un riff si asupra lui Vertigo dar mai ales Rear Window, si Dial M For Murder.

Vacanta la Roma deschide seria Golden Classics la Cinemateca Patria

la ora 17 la Cinemateca Patria BRASOV prezinta Roman Holiday, clasicul din 1953 al lui William Wyler, campion al filmului romantic. Audrey Hepburn si Gregory Peck, printesa si ziaristul si Roma frumoasa, alb-negru, cu Boca dellla Verita, cu scuterul, secondati de Edddie Albert !

Zece nominalizari si Trei premii Oscar, pentru scenariul lui Dalton Trumbo, atunci pe lista neagra a luat Ian McLellan Hunter, care i-a fost paravan (front), costume (Edith Head) si actrita: Hepburn.

Jack Goes Boating (2010)

Am vazut in fine, ca un omagiu, debutul regizoral al lui Phillip Seymour Hoffman (si ramas acum singurul sau film :( , Jack Goes Boating, dupa piesa lui Robert Glaudini. Un film intimist, tandru-dulce amar, o dovada in plus a talentului imens a lui PSH, care si-a reluat rolul de pe scena, secondat aici de John Ortiz (excelent), de Amy Ryan (pe care o numeau o Isabelle Huppert newyorkeza)si Daphne Rubin-Vega.

Doua cupluri newyorkeze, un melanj a la Woody Allen, dar cu personaje mai disfuctionale si working class, si un ton optimist. Un prim film in care Hoffman isi ofera un rol minunat, de misfit, cald insa fata de freaksii jucati in alte parti, cu caciula de iarna, si dreadlocks sub ea, sofer de limuzina, timid si putin sarac cu duhul, sau doar un pic autist.
Muzica de Grizzly Bear si piese de Fleet Foxes, Cat Power, Goldfrapp. Melodia Rivers of Babylon, in varianta celor de la The Melodians, nu va mai fi niciodata la fel.

Philip Seymour Hoffman has a gift for playing quickly embarrassed men who fear rejection. He can convey such vulnerability in some roles that we're on his side without the script needing to persuade us. We want to finish his sentences, clap him on the back, cheer him up. In other roles, such as "Synecdoche, New York," he projects enough ego to enforce his will for years on end. There's an actor for you.
