Variety confirms that commercials director Matthijs Van Heijningen has been hired by Universal to helm a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing.

The story is set at the icy Norwegian camp where the shape-shifting "thing" from another world is discovered, revived and set loose on the men. These are, of course, the events that went down before Carpenter's '82 take on John Campbell Jr's. "Who Goes There?" Battlestar Galactica's Ron Moore is still on board to script. He was attached some time ago.

Mickey Rourke's upcoming wrestling smackdown is set to be a fiery affair because the fighter he'll step in the ring with in Houston, Texas isn't happy with the actor's TV threats. Wwe wrestling star Chris Jericho took offence when Rourke announced his plans to take him on before the Screen Actor Guild Awards on Sunday, and the match sparked a war of words on CNN show Larry King Live on Tuesday - when the fighter and the movie star faced off.

On the red carpet at the SAGs, Rourke told countless reporters of his plans to fight Jericho at the upcoming WrestleMania event in Texas, adding, "Chris Jericho, you better get in shape because I'm coming after your ass."

But The Wrestler star's fighting talk has irked the real wrestler, who told Rourke, "I don't have respect for you... Be careful what you wish for, Mr. Rourke."

A grinning Rourke countered, "I'm gonna take the high road, brother, and just wish you all the best."

Various sources are reporting director Kim Manners has passed away Sunday evening after a battle with cancer. His is not a name you might instantly recognize, however, fans of The X-Files or, hell, even The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. surely remember his work. Manners, who has been in television since 1974 after working on the feature Valdez is Coming , was nominated on four occasions for an Emmy with Chris Carter and company during his term on The X-Files . He has also been serving as a director and executive producer on The CW's Supernatural , starring Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.
