6.04.07 Richards Issues Ashes Statement
Rolling Stone Keith Richards has issued a statement denying he snorted his father's ashes - in a bid to end the worldwide media frenzy over his controversial confession. The guitarist was stunned when what he claims was a joke about mixing the ashes of his dead dad Bert with cocaine and then snorting them, made headlines around the world. His manager Jane Rose on Wednesday insisted the comment - made during an interview with British music magazine NME - was a joke. And now hard-living Richards himself says in a statement, "I wouldn't take cocaine at this point in my life unless I wished to commit suicide. The truth of the matter is that I planted a sturdy English Oak. I took the lid off the box of ashes and he (Bert) is now growing oak trees and would love me for it!"

Disney PR Guys Won't Look to Richards to Promote New 'Pirates'
Reports on Wednesday that The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards had told a British music tabloid that he had snorted a mixture of cocaine and the ashes of his cremated father have flummoxed Disney publicists as they prepare to roll out Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, in which Richards appears in a cameo as Johnny Depp's father. Dennis Rice, Disney's senior vice president for publicity, told today's (Thursday) Los Angeles Times that when he saw the report, his first reaction was, "How are we going to spin this?" Late in the day, the singer said through a spokesman that he was only joking. But his explanation has apparently not been good enough for Disney. "Keith won't be doing a lot of publicity for this movie," Rice told the Times.
