"...I talked to [director] Terry Gilliam in the '80s, and he asked me how I would make Watchmen into a film. I said, ''Well actually, Terry, if anybody asked me, I would have said, 'I wouldn't.''' And I think that Terry [who aborted his attempted adaptation of the book] eventually came to agree with me. There are things that we did with Watchmen that could only work in a comic, and were indeed designed to show off things that other media can't.

am vazut filmul azi dimineata, all of 163 de minute, inainte ca buzzul sa-mi distuga filmul, Hollywood Reporter declara deja filmul un "flop" dar obviously review-erul nu a citit cartea (am sa ma refer la magnum opusul lui Alan Moore ca la o carte si nu un simplu roman grafic, a fost si votata ca unua din cele mai importante opere literare ale secolulului XX!)

"Watchmen a apărut la început ca o serie de 12 cărţi cu benzi desenate, publicate de DC Comics între 1986 şi 1987, apoi republicate sub forma unui roman ilustrat. Coperta cu „faţa zâmbitoare” pătată de stropi de sânge, imaginea ceasului ale cărui limbi se apropie de miezul nopţii este binecunoscută generaţiei, constituind un pas înainte în evoluţia romanului grafic. „Watchmen” este singura carte de benzi desenate care a fost distinsă cu prestigiosul Hugo Award şi care a apărut în topul „celor mai bune 100 de cărţi de limbă engleză din 1923 până acum” alcătuit de revista Time în 2005. De asemenea, cartea a mai câştigat câteva premii Kirby şi Eisner.

Când a apărut, „Watchmen” părea să fie în rezonanţă cu o generaţie căreia războiul nuclear i se părea o probabilitate. La vremea respectivă, dădea voce acelor temeri, fricii de abuz de putere, norului de paranoia şi senzaţiei de neputinţă resimţite de oamenii obişnuiţi, consideraţi insignificanţi de brokerii puterii. Zeci de ani de la publicare, cartea încă mai câştigă adepţi de toate vârstele.

Povestea prezenta un nou concept de supereroi, o mână de personaje care erau „mai mult umane decât super”, oameni adevăraţi care se confruntau cu probleme personale, dar şi etice, oameni care se luptă cu nevrozele şi slăbiciunile, pur şi simplu oameni- toţi, în afara dr. Manhattan, ce este înzestrat cu calităţi deosebite.
Echipa originală de supereroi era compusă din „The Silhouette, Silk Spectre, The Comedian, Hooded Justice, Captain Metropolis, Nite Owl şi Dollar Bill.
Generaţia cea nouă de eroi mascaţi – cei care sunt în inima acţiunii romanului ilustrat- sunt Silk Spectre II, Nite Owl II, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Ozymandias şi The Comedian; fiecare dintre ei reprezintă un anumit fel de putere, o obsesie şi o afecţiune psihică. Fiecare este un fel diferit de supererou. "

You know, there are movies you love and you want other people to love. You mention them at every opportunity, you eulogise and cajole. Watchmen isn't like that.
I love the book, was mesmerised by it - one of those pieces of art that play on in your mind for the rest of your life.
When I saw the film on Monday it was beautiful; glowing colours, dark settings, a lot of polish, obviously lots of money and detail taken. As a fan, it was satisfying to watch but felt stretched out and weak like taffy, not tight, not edited at the right pace.
I can put up with that, I can compare it to the book and forgive it.
A great movie makes the audience proud to have seen it and want to share that feeling - Watchmen doesn't do that. Instead, I wanted to warn people not to see it without reading the book first.
4 stars for fans, 2 for the uninitiated - 3 average

kinda my thoughts for now...ma gindesc sa scriu o cronica detaliata pt rekino.
este extrem de fidel, prea fidel daca se poate spune, cu tot cu monologurile OS ale lui Rorschach !!! montajul de pe generic e cel mai fascinant, istoria super-eroilor de la Minutemen la Watchmen, povestita pe Times Are A Changin' a lui Bob Dylan. Dylan e omniprezent pe soundtrack, fie All Along the Watchtower (cu Jimi Hendrix), cind Rorshcach si Nite Owl se duc in Antrarctica, si Desolation's Row (pe genericul final), un cover punk furios al celor de la My Chemical Romance (clipul a facut parte din campania tie-in a promovarii). Dar aditiile Leonard Cohen (un Halelujah picant), si First we take Manhattan (pe genericul final, de la Doc Manhtattan no dobt, desi ar fi trebuit sa fie John Cale-Sanities!), Nena-99 Luftballons, Ungforgettable (Nat King Cole, in scena de prolog a uciderii Comediantului), Wagner si Valkiriile in Vietnam (wink Apocalypse Now) si in bildungsromanul lui Doc Manhattan muzica lui Philip Glass din Koyaanisquatsi, intregesc score-ul lui Tyler Bates. Sunt fericit pentru alegerile muzicale, dupa primul trailer facut pe Smashing Pumpkins, ma gindeam ca alegerile lui Zack Snyder vor fi mai contemporane si mai sucky...

pe vremea cind Sean Penn nu era un actor mai cabotin ca azi, adica inainte de i am sam, the international, all the kings men si milk...pe vremea cind era hurlyburly...

prima oara am vazut filmul in 2000, in ianuarie, under the influence, cu un prieten, tras de pe un dvd pe vhs, iarna, frig, whisky, Baltica no 9 memories, both fucked up emotionally and so on.. si a parut un clasic...vorbesc dupa cu alt prieten, kinosseur, si-mi spune ca e o voma, of course el l-a vazut treaz, emotionally sober, empatie zero, zice ca Sean Penn joaca ca o cizma (nu stiu exact cum e sa joci ca o cizma, toata viata m-am intrebat dar...anyway am cumparat dvdul la un megadiscount in Franta intr-un supermarket in 2006 ! si revazut aleatoriu tonite...not much really changed ever since...)

basically e o piesa de teatru filmata, anume piesa lui David Rabe din 1984, despre un grup de actori ratati in Los Angleles, care baga la greu droguri si bautura...filmul e sexist si misogin, asa cum sunt personajele sale disfunctionale. Grupul de actori, Sean Penn (care a luat premiul de interpretare la Venetia, cupa Volpi!), Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri, Garry Shandling si femeile pasagere, Robin Wright (Penn), Meg Ryan (intr-un rol cu totul aparte in filmografia ei pina a facut In the Cut, si Anna Paquin (coming-of-age, miam !)

David Rabe a mai scris piesa Streamers dupa care a facut Altman film si scenariul la Casualties of War al lui BDP si The Firm al lui Pollack. Piesa are peste 3 ore si distributia originala, in regia lui Mike Nichols, era la Chicago, in august 1984, William Hurt, Ron Silver, Harvey Keitel, Jerry Stiller, Judith Ivey, Sigourney Weaver si Cynthia Nixon. In 2005 un off-Broadway revival a avut urmatorul cast: Bobby Cannavale, Ethan Hawke, Elizabeth Berkley, Wallace Shawn, Josh Hamilton, Parker Posey si Catherine Kellner.



Titlul (meaning "noisy confusion" or "tumult") este din Actul I, acena I din piesa lui W. Shakespeare, Macbeth:

First Witch: "

Second Witch: "When the hurlyburly's done, / When the battle's lost and won

."


reminds me de Bob, bucatarul roscat din Cristian si termenul lui de hurlyburly din 86/87, toti sunem "ciurliburli", stia el ce zice, pentru ca insemna sa fi nobody, sa te faci vraiste, sa fii vraishte, si asa ne-a facut pe toti, cu punch, apoi party la Echitatie de unde ne-au dat afara si am petrecut noaptea in padure si in copaci fugind de ciinii de la stina...those were the dayz, another life and universe...cheers to former friends !

There is the convention that booze and drugs bring truth. In vino veritas, the Romans said, and Eugene O'Neill wrote his best plays about boozers who pursued truth into the night. Eddie, the Sean Penn character, is a bruised romantic with a good mind, who is as unhappy as a person can be, and in a riveting scene uses cocaine to take him to a place free of raw emotional pain. It is a remarkable performance.

Palme D'or pentru Clint Eastwood !

A PALME D’OR FOR CLINT EASTWOOD
Clint Eastwood, in Paris for the release of his film Gran Torino, was given the Palme d’Or of the Festival de Cannes by Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux at a private ceremony on wednesday, 25th February.

The American filmmaker has a long and trusting relationship with the Festival which first welcomed him for the first time in 1985 with Pale Rider. He has returned to present Bird, and then White Hunter, Black Heart, Mystic River and Changeling.

Over the years, the acknowledgement of his peers has met the growing fervor of international critics to acclaim a major artist who alone makes “the synthesis of the classicism and modernity of American cinema”.
The passion he incites in film lovers is one of admiration and respect, a natural response to his elegance and legendary reserve.

A few years after having paid tribute to Ingmar Bergman, the Festival de Cannes today awarded a Palme d’Or to Clint Eastwood in homage to the talent of a grand master at the summit of his craft.

acum, stim, ca de fapt e un semn de "ne cerem scuze" pentru anul trecut cu Changeling, cind i s-a creat premiul editiei 61, ad-hoc, dupa ce nerecunoscatorul de Sean Penn (aka Milk) a dat premiu lui Entre les Murs si Clint n-a vrut sa vina la ceremonie. Pentru ca nu i-au dat Palmierul nici la Bird, nici la Mystic River ! ok, anyway, kudos Clint, dar mai mult recoup Thierry si Gilles !
