Shutter Island va fi prezenat in afara competitiei la festivalul de la Berlin ! Unde va avea premiera mondiala filmul lui Polanski, The Ghost, acesta in competitie !

Nine (2009)

Nine se citeste la mine Nein. Degeaba s-au chinuit si poate daca regiza Minghella (care e co-scnerist si filmul i-e dedicat), mai era ceva ! Ceea ce functiona ca un muzical pe scena (nu stiu dar n-o fi luat toate Tony-urile degeaba in 1982) nu merge pe ecran ! DDL se chinuie degeaba (destept javier Bardem ca a renuntat la timp), pentru ca nimanui nu-i pasa de Guido Contini (nici publicului pentru ca de data asta fratele Weinstein are in maina un flop garantat, la 80 de milioane $ buget), regizor cica genial ! My foot ! Molto pizza ! Un espresso decafeinizat !

Cred ca lui Fellini i s-ar cam face greata sau macar de o migrena, vazindu-se pus pe ecran in tip muzical si artificial si superficial de (un)Hollywood ! 8 1/2 muzical cu 7 femei, de la Penelope Cruz hot and spicy la Mrs. Kidman amorfa si Sophia Loren, nah mama. Totul cu accente italiene enervante si imbecile, pe muzica si numere coregrafice inspirate de Bob Fosse of course. Rob Marshall (fost coregraf), a facut Chicago bazat tot pe munca lui Fosse, care pusese in scena spectacolul, Nine e un mix de Sweet Charity (in care Fosse adapta excelent Noptile Cabiriei), cu All That Jazz(in care regizorul, alter-ego-ul lui Fosse, Roy Scheider, avea probleme concrete, nu di cazzo belo gallico ale lui DDL. Care method si cu ochelari negri, nu merita sa-i aduca espadrilele lui Mastroianni. o combinatie saracacioasa si cam trista pentru ca desi mentioneaza o perioada de aur (Cinecitta, 1965, La dolce vita), nu in stare sa o glamorizeze nici o secunda. Bine macar ca nu e nominalizat la Oscar pt cel mai bun film, ci are citeva oficii secundare (patru, scenografie, costume, cintec si Penelope in rol secundar dar ea tocmai l-a luat la Woody in Vicky Cristina Barcelona-pe 15 feb la ALDmovielight la LIGHT, Liberty mall).

da, in afara de cursa pentru Best Picture nu s-au schimbat prea multe.

cel mai de kkt e ca marele favorit, The Hurt Locker al mrs. Bigelow care a luat si DGA pentru cel mai bun regizor, si prima femeie care primeste premiul breslei, e minat la fel ca in subiectul sau, fiind extrem de obscur, chiar si pentru votantii, bulversati deja de 9 optiuni. Tot 9 (nu Nine muzicalul) ci nominalizari au si Avatar si Hurt Locker, la egalitate ! What a predicament ! E editia a 82-a, premiile se dau duminica 7 martie. La romani de ziua femeii, asa ca poate ia si Kathryn premiul ! Ar fi si prima femeie din 82 de ani de istorie de omuletz chel, dupa cele 3 nominalizate Lina Wertmuller (Seven Beauties), Jane Campion(Pianul) si Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation). Si Bigelow l-ar merita ! Am pus un smiley la cei ce cred ca vor cistiga si e ok for me si un smiley trist (sic!) la cei ce cred ca vor cistiga si i dont particulary like it. In mod idiot The Hurt Locker a durat mult sa ajunga pe ecrane, la Venetia in 2008, eu personal l-am vazut pe divx tot in 2008, premiera americana si britanica a fost in vara lui 2009, e un film aproape nevazut de publicul larg, iar in Romania a fost lansat direct pe dvd si costa 10 ron. Acum e pus la pret de 45-50 ron, deh, Oscar value! Poate facem cumva o proiectie digitala, dupa ce se termina cu Oscarurile ! Sunt sigur ca si fostul sot Cameron ii tine pumnii lui Kathryn care i-a fost avatar, after all that's how a king of the world behaves !

Elysium (2013)

SF-ul anului ? Mai asteptam Gravity, after earth e after..shave, star trek nem yertem…Da, Elysium e mai bun ca Oblivion, which does not say much, Si mai prost ca District Nine, primul film al lui Neill Blomkamp, sud african, absolvent de efecte speciale. Faptul ca a convins Hollywoodul (sony, tri-star) sa ii dea 90 de milioane de dolari, si sunt toate pe ecran, bravo lui. Insa putea sa gindeasca un scenariu mai solid.
Ne aflam la Los Angeles in 2154 si segregatia e maxima, cei bogati au parasit planeta si stau pe orbita, in Elysium, un fel de Eden. Matt Damon, baiat sarac, vrea acolo. Iradiat, are 5 zile de viata si o singura sansa, sa ajunga la capsula medicala a celor bogati. Plot follows...
Shades de Neuromancer si Johnny Mnemonic, adica cyberpunk ul lui William Gibson, ciordit de Matrix, si de Tetsuo the Iron Man (Shynia Tsukamoto). Plus un look de Mad Max, favele mexicane, exosuit, androizi, metal hurlant.
Sharlto Copley, actorul pe care Blomkamp l-a pus pe orbita, si el sudafrican, e mercenarul Kruger, real badass, William Fichtner e badguy corporatist si Jodie Foster o diabolica politicana. Muzica de debutantul Ryan Amon.
Designul e superb, armele la fel, filmul e violent, insa actul trei e atit de previzibil si patetic, m-as fi asteptat la un film mai putin sentimental-ist de la autorul lui District 9…. Bine ca l-au facut 2 D, Merita insa vazut in IMAX.

Nu am cont pe facebook. Nici nu ma intereseaza. Evit acest tip de control din partea celeorlalti, ma sustrag cit mai pot. De aceea nici povestea celor 2 baieti care au facut un sit, modul de socializare devenit fenomen mondial, din care s-au imbogatit peste poate, nu ma intereseaza. Dar cu faptul ca s-au certat, ca toti romanii de bine, cu asta putem sa empatizam… glumesc, dar doar partial. Un singur ingredient din fabricarea The Social Network
m-a atras. Two words: David Fincher. Regizorul care vede negru acolo unde ceialalti vad alb, autorul thrillerelor dark Seven, Fight Club, The Game, Zodiac, si nu insist asupra cazului straniu al lui Benjamin Button, al sau Forrest Gump, Fincher e unul din putinele cazuri din istoria recenta (ultimii 20 de ani ) de regizori care lucreaza in Hollywood in proiecte de A si inca continua sa fie interesanti. Si nah, din nou Fincher n-a dezamagit. Ceea ce putea sa fie un TV movie banal sau un teenage angst flick a devenit un excelent si sofisticat thriller verbal, cu talking heads, un fel de Toti oamenii presedintelui pentru generatia net. Film de regizor. Din punctul meu de vedere calitatile forte sunt cele asa zis tehnice, anume imaginea, extrem de intunecata, filmata in RED, digital, a lui Jeff Cronenweth (DOP la Fight Club si operator de camera la Seven), si sound design brici (Ren Klyce, colaboratorul lui Fincher de la Seven incoace), si muzica excelenta, atmosferica de Trent Reznor si Atticus Ross (aka Nine Inch Nails). Soundtrackul functioneaza in acelasi fel in care o facea cel de la Fight Club, acela facut de Dust Brothers. Ca si filmul, extrem de inrudit cu Fight Club, acum fara furia aceea schizoida, pe care l-am vazut descris undeva ca “un Fight Club fara Marla”. Acum dincolo de verdicte gen, “Filmul unei intregi generatii”, “filmul care defineste aceasta generatie”, etc, este unul din filmele anului, si va fi regasit pe listele de bilant ale criticii, cu premii si acolade, cu sanse la Oscar. Scenariul lui Aaron Sorkin (bazat pe cartea The Accidental Billionaires de Ben Mezrich) avea 166 de pagini (regula e de o pagina pe minut) asa ca Fincher a filmat mai repede, de unde si ritmul exclent de punctat al conversatiei. Jesse Eisenberg, actorul care-l joaca pe Mark Zuckerberg, cel care a creat Facebook, si a devenit miliardar la douazeci si ceva de ani, are o particularitate de freak&geek genial.


Criticului american Roger Ebert i-a adus aminte de geniul sahist Bobby Fischer, dar ii considera ca suferind de sindromul Asperger (“they possess genius but are tone-deaf in social situations. Example: It is inefficient to seek romance by using strict logic to demonstrate your intellectual arrogance”.) How true.
Si ajungem la afirmatia ca e un film misogin, si care se refera la cite lucruri de-a lungul istoriei au fost facute pentru a cuceri/avea o femeie. Sau din respingerea unei femei. Cam toate. So in this case, welcome to Facebook,
nu unealta de control CIA din teoriile conspirationiste ci drogul unei intregi generatii deziluzionate, in cautare de sex si identitate. Fight Club, nu cu pumnii, ci cu vite(a)za de download adecvata.

Buena suerte Penelope ! aici foto din remake-ul la Abre los Ojos-Vanilla Sky, cu Cruiserul de care era linked then (mai bine fara), si in care Cameron Crowe, mr . director a incercat sa refaca coperta la The Freewheeling Bob Dylan, completa cu camionera WW !

Prime Cut (1972)

inainte sa faca comedii debile si mai putine debile, Michael Ritchie a facut filme importante, deosebite, Downhill Racer si Candidatul cu Robert Redford, Smile, The Island despre care am scris deja aici, si acest film, cel putin ciudat, ruda indepartata cu Get Carter si 99 and 44/100% Dead (acelasi productor si scenarist, un alt curio pe care l-am vazut prin 1986 si-l caut si nu e pe dvd), crime melodrama in care un irlandez Nick Devlin (Lee Marvin, excelent, direct din Point Blank ) vine la o ferma din Kansas City sa se rafuaisca cu Mary-Ann (Gene Hackman as his meanest), si fratele sau psihotic Weenie (Gregory Walcott of the Plan Nine from Outer Space fame), urmarit de redncksi blonzi cu pusti care nu trag numai in turkey shoot. Un generic excelent in fabrica de carne din care ies crenvursti mai speciali, apoi o scena de vinzare de femei ca de vite, o gramada de culoare locala la un tirg cu tot cu fanfara in uniforma, lapte, vite, o urmarire in cimp antologica cu o seceratoare, si un shoot-out in lanul cu floarea soarelui. Un curio, sec si dur si destul de sleazy, pe care l-am vazut prima data, alb-negru din intimplare pe o caseta video prin 1988, si mi-a ramas in cap, film rar pe care l-a scos pe dvd Paramount in SUA in 2005 -in 1972 a iesit film produs la Cinema Center Films(independent) de Joe Wizan ! si in editie europeana UK (cronica excelenta dvdtimes aici). Pe dvd e dat si titlul frantuzesc Carnage, si un track audio in franceza). Cronica franceza zice ca Ritchie i-ar fi fost luat filmul din mina, ca
s-a refilmat si ca montajul nu-i apartine, dar aceiasi croncia zice ca e 1.85 si nu 2.35 ceea ce e pas vrai ! In alta parte nu am gasit nici o informatie despre asta, am si eu o probelma cu finalul gen fairytale dar am simitit o tenta ironica acolo !

si nu Sissy Spacek, nu apare deloc in aceasta tinuta hippy-pop !!!

Prime Cut is a strangely likeable if decidedly oddball thriller from 1972. A happy collision of gangster genre grit (validated by Lee Marvin's granite-faced lead performance) with a strain of shameless (though shrewd) exploitation not unfamiliar to screenwriter Robert Dillon (X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes), plus the kinetic, semi-documentary wit of director Michael Ritchie (The Candidate) makes Prime Cut both a straightforward noir and a satire of itself.

Best known as debutul lui Sissy Spacek, care apare goala si dezgolita si tinuta in brate de Lee Marvin, tough guy with a softie for a blonde pre-Carrie !!!
imagine excelenta de Gene Polito in Panavision si muzica atmosferica de Lalo Schifrin ! Eddie Egan, prietenul lui Hackman, unul din politistii reali din French Connection, apare si el in film !

The Equalizer 3 (2023)

The Equaliser 3 is more like Man on Fire 2.

Also because it reunites Denzel and Dakota Fanning after 19 years after Man on Fire, the Tony Scott film based on A.J. Quinnel book. 

Actually Equaliser 3 might be more violent than MoF, more like the Italian poliziotteschi of the 70's, in the vein of Fernando Di Leo and Sergio Sollima's films. 

Denzel is great, better than in the other two, meaner, wiser, deeper. Amazingly he shot this at 67 years of age (he will be 69 this December). Hard physical work, very much like his character, Robert McCall, "Roberto".  

This time the film is set in Sicily and Italy, Naples, Altamonte, Rome. Beautiful locations, great supporting local actors, mean Camorra bad guys. 

Written by Richard Wenk (16 Blocks, ), like the other two. 

Happy to see Remo Girone in such a nice part. Dottore Enzo, a good guy for the man who fascinated me me in the early Nineties as Tano Cariddi in La Piovra series. Last time I saw Girone as Enzo Ferrari in Ford v Ferrari/Le Mans '66, another very nice part. But I remember him being in an episode of Killing Eve and doing nothing more than being part of the scenery.

The best of the series imo (they are based on The Equaliser TV series) , was very disappointed by the Second one (2018), and the first one (2014) was ok, but that's all. Expected more from Fuqua and Denzel re-teaming (this is their Fifth project together), they did greater stuff before (Training Day), and worse (The Magnificent Seven remake), so this is a plus for their re-match. Also it's supposed to be "The Final Chapter", as advertised.

Biggest asset, Robert Richardson stepping in as DOP, major change, the shadows, flares and the darkness are superb !

Also Marcelo Zarvos did a great job as the composer of the score, taking his cue from Harry Gregson-Williams who did the previous two  film scores and the theme of the EQ. Zarvos pushes a very poignant new Eq theme, loud and urgent, like an angry Sonar, a la Trent Reznor & Nine Inch nails.  The rest of the score is very dramatic, with classic cues and symphonic orchestrations, a Sicilian theme reminiscent of The Godfather, some Turandot ("Nessun Dorma") and it made me happy to hear the Sacha Distel's song, La Belle Vie in a less turbulent moment of the picture.

I couldn't give a s*it about the end credits song (Monster 2.0) though. 

Final showdown very much Scarface like, even the line is there: 

liked this one, as spoken by Remo Girone: "They're like Cancer. and like Cancer, there's no Cure".

The Berlinale was deeply saddened to hear of the death of the great French director Claude Chabrol. As one of the founders of the Nouvelle Vague, he ranked among the most celebrated and productive filmmakers of French cinema. He made 71 films over the 50 years of his career.

Nine of his films were presented at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 1959, he first participated in the Berlinale with his second feature film Les cousins (The Cousins), which won the Golden Bear. In more recent years, his entries to the Berlinale Competition included La fleur du mal (The Flower of Evil, 2003) and L’ivresse du pouvoir (A Comedy of Power, 2006). Claude Chabrol was invited to the Berlinale in 2009 to screen Bellamy. On this occasion, he was awarded the Berlinale Camera for his impressive oeuvre and remarkable contribution to film.

Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick says of Claude Chabrol’s death: “We have lost a superb director, a critical mind and a bon vivant. In his psychological dramas and crime films, he relentlessly cast a critical eye on the bourgeoisie. Claude Chabrol was full of humour, and knew how to mix social criticism with fun and entertainment. Known for being a gourmet, he also attached great importance to excellent cooking for himself and his team when shooting his films.”

A proof of LIFE, indeed (in deed?), Charlie Watts got to enjoy only two months of his eighties so...think back at Brian Jones who only got 27 years to breathe :( , Lennon got shot at Forty, he would've been 83 now...Bobby Keys, who was born same day as Keith and was his best buddy in the band, died at 70 !, and Robbie Robertson, got to enjoy a month of his Eighties, just after completed his best soundtrack ever, for Killers of the Flower Moon...

so, Happy 4 ya, Keef !!!
