Ian McShane despre Johnny Depp, Zappa, Timothy Carrey

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY:
When I spoke to Johnny Depp earlier this year he said that, while making On Stranger Tides, the pair of you bonded over a shared love of Captain Beefheart.
IAN McSHANE:
Yeah. Johnny’s got quite quirky, eclectic musical tastes and so do I. I’m a huge fan of [Frank] Zappa and Beefheart. Johnny’s very versed in that time. We were talking about a very brilliant but erratic American actor called Timothy Carey. He was in Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing but he was clearly off his trolley. And he made this film, The World’s Greatest Sinner. I’d never seen it. Johnny said,”I’ve got to get you this movie.” And he sent it to me. It’s a wacko film. And who did the music for it? Frank Zappa. I just started his biography again, Zappa. I was reading it and it was one of those funny things that came out of nowhere. He wrote the music for The World’s Greatest Sinner.

Vanishing on 7th Street (2010)

Brad Anderson e un regizor foarte versatil, a inceput cu filme romantice dar a devenit cunoscut in genul horror/thriller (Session 9, Masinistul (am postat cronica mea de la premiera aici), Transsiberian), dar lucreaza si in seriale (de la The Shield, la The Wire, Treme si Boardwalk Empire) si serii/antologii horror (un episod din Masters of Horror, anume Sounds Like-2006 si unul in Fear Itself-anume Spooked-2008). Dar acest proiect, cu titlu insipid, Vanishing on 7th Street (de la Cehov by Malle, Vanya on 42d Street la Across the 110th Street), e un mix intre The Mist si un episod Twilight Zone/Outer Limits, ca un mediu-metraj at best, labartat la lungimea unui lung metraj, si ca o povestire timpurie de Stephen King. Probabil ca scenariul(Anthony Jaswinski) e de vina, ca nu aduce mult peste premiza si misterul initial.
Poate si castingul e de vina, pentru ca nici unul din cei trei actori nu m-a convins. Hayden Christiansen e skleepwalking, Thandie Newton e patetica si John Leguizamo isteric si mumbling, si daca nu-ti pasa de personaje, atunci cum poti sa empatizezi sa vezi cine cind va disparea si cine va supravietui ?
pericolul e nenumit, nedefinit, SPOILER: e chiar Intunericul !
efectele de intunecime sunt chul, sound designul creepy, dar nu e suficient.

La Piel Que Habito in avanpremiera !

aseara (super-sold-out cu o zi inainte !) si miine la ora 18.00 la cinema Studio din Bucuresti, in cadrul festivalului Les Films de Cannes a Bucarest, noul film al lui Almodovar, La Piel Que Habito,un combo de Atame !, Carne Tremula, Nip/Tuck, Bride of Frankenstein si Les Yeux sans Visage, care intra in sali pe 11 noiembrie 2011 !
Cel mai Cronenberg Almodovar, de parca spaniolul s-ar fi transformat in canadian, dar cu o solaritate iberica in locul racelii de temperatura frigorifica, pe cind acesta incearca sa se descotoroseasca de reputatia sa de shocker/flesh horror-maker ! Bazat pe un roman de Thierry Jonquet intitulat "Mygale", Almodovar si fratele sau Augustin au scis un scenariu care schimba mult din structura cartii. Totodata primul Almodovar cu Antonio Banderas in 21 de ani de la Atame (Leaga-ma, dezleaga-ma) si un showcase senzual pentru frumoasa Elena Anaya (Lucia y il sexo, Hable Con ella, Mesrine, Habitacion en Rome), pe muzica de coarde dezlantuita de Alberto Iglesias. Situat in Toledo-ul anului 2012, este povestea unui chirurg estetic care a descoperit o piele artificiala (Banderas), si care tine sechestrata in casa o frumoasa si misterioasa victima (Anaya). Urmeaza twist and shout, insa pe ritm de flamenco si tango scrisnit, creat de matadorul Pedro !
Poate un film care functioneaza mai bine la non-fanii lui Almodovar(comme moi), decit la cei care cred ca au un following pentru el dar nu destul de kinky (as the movie is), ratat de mine la Cannes, vazut aseara si recomandat (atentie: contine sex, nuditate, si singe) de mine si multa lume, chiar daca la Cannes presa s-a divizat, americanii jubileaza (metacritics-70 %):
"Rejoice in the fact that one of world cinema’s great artists is doing anything but resting on his laurels: Pedro Almodovar’s giddily unclassifiable The Skin I Live In might be the most challenging and unsettling movie of the Spanish auteur’s career, while still maintaining his usual unabashed humor and novelistic nuance."

Almodovar pointed to "Frankenstein," "Pygmalion," "Vertigo," the myth of Prometheus and the French horror film "Eyes Without a Face" as part of the "deep cultural pool of resonance" that influenced him when making the film.

"It was a reflection of any kind of creation," he said. "Even I identify sometimes with the character of Antonio." To a point, anyway: "I'm not saying all directors should be psycho like that."
