quote: There was a time, awhile back, when Bono - from U2 - had heard that Captain Beefheart was living in a trailer in the desert. My guess is that the guy assumed that Don - like so many eclectic players before him - was near destitute, and therefore - felt sorry for him. Sorry enough as it seems, to have extended an invitation...
So he sent him a letter and said “Captain Beefheart, if you’d like to come perform on our tour or open up or play a few dates with us - we’d be very proud - I want to write with you”... and Don writes back: “Dear Bongo, I don’t know who you are or what you want from me but don’t call me again.” :-) also:
"The stars are matter. We are matter. But it doesn't matter."
Albumul meu preferat de Captain Beefhearst e apt intitulatul: A carrot is as close a rabbit gets to a diamond ! Nu glumesc, e un album-compilatie facut in 1998, si unul din cele 3 pe care le detin cu Beefheart, imi place pentru ca e eclectic si pentru ca are o seectie de piese ehhaustiva (19) si eclectica (de la baladescul succes Bluejeans and Moonbeams la elegiacul Further Than We've Gone, cu un pian si o chitara geniale, la tzacaneala de free jazz, Light Reflected off the Oceans of the Moon, la dementiala The Past Sure Is Tense, la piesa-titlu,
cu introducerile vocale din Apes Ma ("your cage isn't getting any better, Apes Ma") and so on...) asa ca am stat sa-l ascult toata ziua pentru ca dupa citeva incursiuni pe youtube, aparitii la Letterman, interviu Frank Zappa despre el (Zappa a murit pe 4 decembrie 1993 la 52 de ani ! iar Van Vliet era deja retras de 10 ani, tot in acel an Anton Corbjin a facut un documentar scurt despre el, ultima marturie video cu ex-Capitanul!), am luat discurile din raft si e a treia oara cind A carrot is as close a rabbit gets to a diamond a curs, si m-a izbit dupa multa vreme genilitatea pieselor. Am mai ascultat doar o piesa Beefheart recent, Her Eyes (are a Blue Million Miles, din soundtrackul la The Big Lebowski, care m-a izbit cind am vazut filmul, prima oara la cinema in Praga, alaturi de Terje (cel care m-a introdus lui Cpt. B) , si cind The Dude asculta ceea ce la prima impresie poate parea o cacofonie sonora...(cum zicea un comentariu de pe youtube, "who needs drugs and/or beer when there's Beefheart ?")
"He was like the scout on a wagon train. He was the one who goes ahead and shows the way. He was a demanding bandleader, a transcendental composer (with emphasis on the dental), up there with Ornette [Coleman], Sun Ra and Miles [Davis]. He drew in the air with a burnt stick. He described the indescribable. He's an underground stream and a big yellow blimp.
"I will miss talking to him on the phone. We would describe what we saw out of our windows. He was a rememberer. He was the only one who thought to bring matches. He's the alpha and the omega. The high water mark. He's gone and he won't be back."
